I have updated information and a link to the patch in the first post.

Saturn does not support 512 pixels for horizon resolution.
It is useless. Here is how looks the image in resolution of 640x240 (single- and double-interlaces):

You know, it might be worth looking into the old PC port and seeing if it uses higher resolution backgrounds. If it does it might be possible to swap them in and make a resolution hack of Resident Evil. It might be possible to do it using this tool:

Not bad idea. But I doubt that even in the PC version the backgrounds have a higher resolution image than on consoles.

I think the PC version of Resident Evil did support 640x480. Now whether or not that's actual resolution of the backgrounds or if they're scaled up I don't know.

And the High-Res Story of Thor 2 looks really nice. Have you tried it on real hardware? It would be interesting to know just how well the Saturn could actually handle 2D at that resolution.

No. I dont have hardware Saturn. But by soft emulation in this cause VDP1 objects is disappears.

Res hack v1.3 + fixes some bugs of the original game + NTSC patch!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes in version 1.3:
- The horizontal alignment of the screen in rooms "B2F 1-2".
- The horizontal alignment of menu items (option screen, save/load screen, ranking screen).
- Change the color of some menu items (option screen, save/load screen, ranking screen).
- The semi-transparent menu background is now limited to a transparent frame around the edges of the screen (instead of the full fill the screen).
- Unlock hidden option items (difficulty selection and view rating).
- Completely removed PAL screen optimization (intended for conversion PAL to NTSC version of the game).

I'll have to give the UMK3 hack a try. Can I just rip my retail disc and use that image or is there a specific one I need to use?

Also one that might be neat to try is the port of Darius II. That game could really benefit running in high-res mode.

You just need to use the rip of NTSC-U version of the game.

If this game uses X,Y scrolling, than Res-hack is possible. But about Hi-res mode I not sure.

Basically the game in Arcades spanned across 2-3 screens depending on the revision. For the Saturn port you can either have it zoomed in to one screen and have it scroll, or you can zoom it out and have it be letterboxed. However if I remember correctly it runs in the lower res modes (either 320 or 352x240, not sure which). So when you zoom out everything get's really pixelated.

It would be interesting to see if the scaling when zoomed out would look better in a higher resolution.

paul, just curious, how looks Lost Vikings 2 - Norse by Norsewest with your resolution hack ? i saw it listed on your other thread :)
