Translating Fire Pro Wrestling S : 6Men Scramble

I originally had this thread over at romhacking dot net but every post took a day or two to go up since it always needed moderator approval :/

I started poking around the 3 bin files on the disc and found the chunks of Japanese text.

I'm using this JIS Table: https://mattsmessyroom.com/uploads/sjis.tbl so big shout out to Matt and his messy room.

I also set encoding in the hexeditor to Shift-JIS and that lets me see the correct characters in the editor.

And with that we have the basic wrestler edit menu in ENGLISH!

There are some *HUGE* limitations, so much more info in in the Japanese, so I had to make some sacrifices.

For example, where that screenshot says "ACT" literally translates into "skill equipment / skills equipped" and localized is closer to meaning "Move set" but I only get 3 letters since I couldn't do it with the 2bit values in the JIS table (the lines would just be blank) I had MVS there , short for "moves" but Pinball Jim came up with "Act" , short for "actions" so badda bing badda boom, its in.

So for now I'm injecting the altered bin files into the ISO with CDMage and it seems to work just peachy in the emulator "Yaba Sanshiro" v3.4.0 ; to note I did have to emulate BIOS to get the game to stop crashing at match loads but it still crashes after the match ends. I make look into another emulator when it comes time to translate the story mode screens that happen after you win the 6 championships.

I have all the feature choices (wrestling outfit) done, all the main mode choise screens done ,and Ive started on the moves since that should take the most time and I wanna start chipping away at it.

rZDdZnC.jpg

I havent found the EXIT characters yet or the clip board color character either. Im sure as I get more done they'll be less to root through

The localization of this is proving to be a little challenging , for example one of the taunts is "両手拡げ叫び" which pretty much means "scream with both hands" but I only get 6 letters to work with. I used SCREAM for this, but I'm hoping there aren't tooooooooo many screaming taunts. Lots of abbreviations had to be used too. A lot is pretty ambiguous like "両手振り" meaning "both hands gesture" so Im just trying to put something that makes sense like "RAYS"...... get it? oh well can be changed later if I want :)

Big thanks to Slinga-homebrew for his save game loader (that works in Yaba Sanshiro too!)

Welcome to SX.

Any mods around? Can you move this thread to the Saturn Dev section?

I went to delete a single pic and I guess I deleted the whole post, my bad. Here we go again......

I pumped this:

Into google translate and got this:
Many groups are scattered,
This chaotic time
What do wrestlers want,
Why wander...

To find the answer
Have to keep fighting
And after finishing the battle,
You are the savior who saves this era,
Will be a Messiah...

So I did the best I could to paraphrase it:
VIctory.JPG

I have all the various mode main screens done, but I may tweak them a little:
menuselect.JPG

And I have a lot of the match setting screen done as well
exib.JPG

And Ive been chipping away at the bulk of the 400+ moves
movesscreen.JPG

And Im trying to sort out all the top level menus too, like Victory Road

Continuing on with "Victory Road" mode, I worked on the screen for selecting a championship that is already done (started in the last pic above)

再び挑戦したい場合は「タイトルマッチ」モードで easily and directly means "If you want to try again, use "Title Match" mode "
このタイトルを返上してください translates to "please return this title"

So I used that space to say: Use "Title Match" to try again or delete.
tryagain.JPG

That made the most sense to me.

On the actual title clear screen you get this pop up:
belt.JPG

ベルトを返上してもよろしいですか / Are you sure you want to give up your belt?

So changed it to "Return the belt?"

chipping along......

Hey, I love Fire Pro and am so excited to see this is being worked on! I have 2 modded Saturn consoles, one NTSC with Mode ODE and one Pal console with 50/60hz/modchip. Would be happy to test images on real hardware if you need a tester :)

I'll probably put the WIP files up for download soon enough, there's just some more menu stuff to sort out first. I dont plan on making people wait while I do all the moves; and Im always ready for some feedback and suggestions

So I have almost all the menu stuff done, some of it is *REALLLLLLY* hard to find because they use 2 character values for some instead of 4, and its just not easy.

it took some work but I finally found the initial load screen when you have a cart inserted, and I translated it.
Originally it was どちらのバックアップを使用しますか / Which backup do you use?
So I changed it to "Load from where?" It just fit better.
loadgame.JPG

And under data for create a wrestler I finally found the values for data management.
EX-Exit
LOD- Load
SAV-Save
DEL-Delete

Very limited space.

Instead of people having to ask me to test the files, I just put them here:
FirePro S Translation Project - Google Drive

I dont know how to make delta patches yet, so just use CDmage to inject the files.

You can rename the wrestlers in game or use @slinga 's save game loader. I'm going to make a save game using his as a base but thats way into the future.

Finally had some time to test it out. I couldn't figure out how to get CDmage to edit the ISO so I used another program and then had to manually cut the first 0x8000 bytes from the original ISO to the edited ISO. Once I did that I was able to get it to boot on real hardware. I also realize this is very much a work in progress. My initial thoughts:

1) Woot it works on real hardware.
2) Time has not been kind to the graphics. Fire Pro uses a lot of dithering and my SCART + OSSC setup make it look pretty bad.
3) The game holds up and is still a blast to play, even one player.

On to the actual translation stuff:
4) For the main screen, with all of the game modes, I recommend capitalizing the first letters of the words. For example change "Title unifying battle" to "Title Unifying Battle"
5) The second game mode, says "Exibition" is that a typo or did you run out of room?
6) Under Rename, "Rename Existing" is left justified. I'm assuming the original Japanese text was much larger? Maybe add spaces in front.
7) I'm not sure what the real name of the refs are supposed to be. The gamefaqs translation guide has:
Panther Tottori (VIEW JAPAN), Joe Hiroshi (OLIVE JAPAN) Mr. Mizunaka (UWH/SHOOTING), Bat Watanabe (Independent) which I think is the fake names, not real names.

My thoughts on the save:
8) First issue is I have no clue where I acquired this save from. Must of been someone with a Netlink.
9) Using the Fire Pro save from my Save Game Copier (slinga-homebrew/Save-Game-Copier) saves you from having to rename all ~200 wrestlers. It also avoids you from having to worry about name sizes.
10) It has the drawback that all of the hidden characters have been unlocked. I'm curious if there's something in the save data that lets us characters while keeping them hidden.
11) The save has title belts on characters. Maybe return the titles?
12) The second federation (Heisei Ishingun??) wasn't renamed and is still in Japanese. All other federations were renamed to English.
13) What to do with the 16 Create a Characters on the save? I say delete KING and Sheng Chiang as they are not wrestlers AFAIK. I gotta say I'm impressed with this guys Giant and Scott Hall, look spot on. That leaves two spots for additional wrestlers.
14) When you played FPS, did you save to the backup cart? If so did you get more save slots than 16? I have a vague recollection of that being the case.
15) I have a desire to reverse engineer the FPS save now...

Anyway sorry for the rambling post, cool work.

I have another friend testing it with an ODE, I cant afford to burn a disc after every update ;)
4) I actually started to do this but need to go back and fix the rest
5) I ran out of room but I think I can make it happen
6) I added both 8140 and 2020 spaces and its still not centered. I will mess around with it more.
7) Panther Tottori is Tiger Hatorri from New Japan Pro, Joe Hiroshi is Joe Higuchi from All Japan Pro, Mizunka is Soronaka from UWF, and Bat Watabe is Ted Tanabe from Michinoku Pro

9) I didnt plan to rename the fighters in the ROM, just include a link to your save game importer, and provide you with an updated save to inject into it (and try to talk Cafe-Alpha into adding as well)
10) You cant re-lock them, and if they are locked you cant rename them. The save also unlocks all the ability points.
12) SHINSEI TOBAKU-GUN / Heisei Ishingun ; I cant seem to find the name in the data, but I will eventually :)

I planned to myself in King's place but hadnt given the create a wrestler spots much more thought than that. With the menus in English its easy enough for anyone to delete or overwrite a spot. I am not saving to a cart, as I use a Kai flashed 4 in 1 cart to boot the ISO; talk @cafe-alpha into sending me a gamers cart :p

I uploaded new files last night but Ive actually gotten more done since and should upload new files tonight, time permitting.
There is a lot to translate in the logic area of create a wrestler.

This is the cleanest option. Just sucks to not be able to unlock characters. Maybe there's something in the save data?

This is in rename option. This save file renamed all of the federations except for the 2nd one.

Also I just verified, if you use the internal memory on the Saturn you get 16 Create-a-Wrestler (CAW) slots. If you use the external cart you get 64.

I forgot to mention in the my last post, but the final ISO should be region free.

I found another 6MS save: 6MSFuture.

Edit: I got the save to load in Yabause. It has 16 new Create a Wrestlers but they look mostly terrible. I also figured out a trivial way to pick and choose multiple create-a-wrestlers (CAW) from multiple save files. The basic idea is (easiest in an emulator):

1) Load the first save file to internal memory.
2) From within the Fire Pro "Create a Wrestler" copy the wrestlers you want to keep to the backup cart. The Create-a-Wrestler mode lets you save to either internal OR external memory regardless of which save you started the game from. So copy any of the 1-16 internal memory wrestlers to the external cart.
3) Replace the internal save with next Fire Pro save and repeat.
4) Once you have all the created wrestlers you want to keep, replace the internal save with the Renamed save file.
5) Copy up to 16 wrestlers from the external cartridge to the internal memory save.
6) Extract the save game from the emulator and use that as our new template.

Here is the roster (from a thread I found, I couldn't figure out most of them by looking at them):

1) Kazushi Sakuraba (from FPA) - Circa 2001
2) Undertaker ("Deathhead" from FP2) - Circa 2001
3) Big Show ("Gigaton Joe" from FP2) - Circa 2001
4) Goldberg ("Golden Hammer" from FP2) - Circa 2000
5) Dirk Deadwood <---- This was an edit freem made, and I've decided to leave it in here because the save would not be possible without him having beaten the game first
6) ??? (Probably the most creative of all the edits; missing around 5 moves, give or take one. You can probably guess who he is from the info.)
7) Royce Gracie (appearance from 6MS) - Circa 1996
8) Naoya Ogawa (appearance is Mr. X from FPA) - Circa '00-01
9) The Tiger II ("The Panther 2" from FPR) - Circa 2006
10) Kurt Angle (from FPD and FP2) - Circa '01-02
11) Matt Hardy (from FP2) - Circa 2002
12) Ken Shamrock (from FPG) - Circa 2000
13) Kane (from FPG) - Circa 2000
14) Yuji Yamashita (from FPG storymode; uses Ittetsu Wakamoto's attire and moves)
15) Vince McMahon (from FPD) - Circa 2001
16) nWo Sting (from FPG) - Circa 1997

edit #2: The translated save has the following wrestlers:

1) Steve Austin - looks OK, something about the face is a bit off
2) Chris Candido - dunno
3) Tommy Dreamer - not that good
4) Shane Douglas - dunno
5) Sheng Chiang - not a wrestler
6) Taz - not that good
7) King - not a wrestler
8) Marc Mero - spot on
9) Hunter Helmsley - lol a bit off but passable
10) Owen Hart - Tights look good, face is off
11) Lex Luger - not bad, face is off
12) The Giant - looks good
13) Scott Hall - looks good
14) Dallas Page - face is off
15) New Jack - ok
16) Mustafa - can't recogonize him

Could you not change the string pointers so you can afford for longer texts?
That's beyond the scope of what I know how to do. This *is* my first rodeo. I'll do what I can and if some PROtato wants to use my work as a base to make an even better translation, I'm all for it.

I think I found the story mode text, so I decided to change some of it, so that it'll be easier to find in the future!
It'll be Kanji, literal translation, then what I made fit

故やるしかないな
きつい闘いになるかもしれないけど・・・
最後はムーンサルトで締めてやる
防いで防いで防ぎまくって
DDTも俺には通用しないよ
ここで止まるわけにはいかないし・・・

I have no choice but to do it
It might be a tough fight...
At the end I'll close it with Moonsalt
Prevent, prevent, prevent
DDT doesn't work for me either
I can't stop here...

I have to
It will be tough...
Moonsault close
Prevent this!
DDT wont help
Cant stop here...

Hi guys.

i was contacted about some of the edits i collected over the years. sadly i'm pretty sure the save i had is dead and gone, but i did preserve a large chunk of the edits i found over the years.

I also was working on an updated translation guide/spreadsheet that updated the names of the wrestlers based on their real names and gimmicks at the time. life kinda slapped me in the face late last year and i had to break off from the project, but i had made contacts in the wrestling world who were very familiar with the promotions in japan and were helping me find the best ways of naming the wrestlers within the confines of the RENAME function in 6ms.

at some point a year or 2 ago, i made contact with the creator of 6ms Edit. he lost the source and executable for v1.5, but i still had v1.3 available on my ridiculous website from 20+ years ago if you want to mess with edit creation.

This was one of my all time favorite games, and i'm glad to see a translation project actually moving forward again (i was involved in an attempt back a VERY long time ago, around the time of FPD).

if i can be of any help, please let me know.

Thanks for the edits you sent. I want to have 16 good CAWs to go with the translated save. Do you have anymore than the 8 you sent me? The list had Arguak, Ted Dibiase, Glacier, Scott Hall, Triple H, J-Force, Kevin Nash, and rocky Miavia.

i have a LOT of old edits, i just need to find them.

i really like the idea of trying to allow for the "unlock" and such. i'm sure it is just a bit set in the save data. probably something could be found if we did byte for byte comparisons between save games at various stages.

I'm sure I can lock them back. The issue is if they are locked can we still rename them within the save.

I believe the save format might be compressed. I created a new save, renamed one character, and then looked at the save. It wasn't obvious to me where the save name was.

Edit: I'm a moron. The file is Shift-JIS encoded. Once you do that the strings pop right out. No compression at all. Also the last 4 bytes of the file appear to be some sort of additive checksum. I changed a 'T' to a 'A' and the checksum decreased by the same amount (0x13).

in other news I renamed the promotions so they'll have their correct names without the save file ; I just happened across OLIVE JAPAN and knew what I found

Does anyone know how many matches you have to win before you see cut scenes? Can anyone provide me a save prior to seeing a cut scene?
Ive been slowly eeking my way through the HWA heavyweight title and I think Im like 6 matches in with no scenes.
