EDIT:

The C4 - 2006 discussion started later in this thread:

The C4 - 2005 discussion started right here:

What about a new Saturn coding contest

to give birth to new homebrew releases,

to bring new devvers to the Saturn scene,

to gain more publicity for Saturn dev?

Should it be a Saturn or SEGA console only contest here at segaXtreme or

should we try to convince other popular multi console contests to take Saturn entries?

Well, starting Saturn dev might not be easy, so it would need some good prices to win and even better n00b tutorials.

I would like to donate some prices: :smash

SEGA Saturn, Genesis and Game Gear consoles and possibly some games.

(but I can't effort to give away titles like Panzer Dragoon Saga... :D )

Furthermore I would like to work on tutorials and some sort of DCFreeDev for Saturn dev.

Such an all-in-one installer which quickly brings new devvers to a compiled example would be great!

I'd love to see new Saturn homebrew releases....

Edited by Amon:

Please note that I have duplicated this thread for c4 2007 and deleted all the previous stuff in it. You can find it here http://forums.segaxtreme.net/showthread.php?t=16037

So please talk about 2007 there. I havent deleted the c4 2007 from this yet.

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

whohoo new contest !!

Something like : submit a card game or a demo (like PC demo)

IMO, it should be Saturn only and we should convince as many people as possible.

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

If you set up another contest, I give an entry.

But :

Sure, but how ? Are there any saturn developper outside of this board ? I also believe non-developpers are not interested. Do you remember how many members of this board did vote for the last contest ? And the former contest page does not even work anymore !

where did you find this link ? I will correct links one by one in the Saturn programs section

I'll enter too, just give a lot of time for development.

The rockin' B has this link on his site

which neither works now. It must have been changed in between.

slinga : How many months do you need ?

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

I'd prefer atleast 3 or so months. But then again majority rules, if the rest of you guys prefer a longer or shorter timeframe let me know. I'll just pick a easier project.

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

Thanks for your support slinga, vreuzon and Reinhart!

Time frame:

Gamers like to play stuff around christmas, so we should focus the contest to close at 31. November 2005 for now.

It should be officially announced and started when preparations

(easy saturn dev package, some small and simple examples, contest webpage, splash screens) are finished,

so let's say 1st June, or more likely 1st July 2005.

Contest name/title:

some suggestions:

segaXtreme Saturn coding contest 2005 (SX-SCC 2005)

Saturn coding contest 2005

edit:

Classic Console Coding Contest 2005 (C4 2005)

(I'm somewhat excited about this "explosive" title)

What's your opinion?

If we agreed to a title, I'll start asking people to create splash screens for the games/demos.

Webpage:

I've asked IceMan2k if we could host the contest website at SX and

if we could get a special contest forum such that each entry got it's own WIP topic.

Still have to wait for his reply.

As an alternative(addition) I've been very impressed by Mr. Saturn's Sega Developers Crew webpage

which he created along the last contest.

I think he could possibly create a similar webpage which suits our needs even better than the forum topic approach alone.

I'll ask him what he thinks about this.

Support:

I think we can/will get some support by others with the contest

like prices, publicity, splashscreens.

Well I have to care about my GP32 entry for the GBAX(closes May 31st), too,

but I will try to make a package of Dev-Cpp + SGL + SBL + KPIT GNUSH GCC + coding examples. If it goes fine, I'll switch from COFF to ELF object format.

BTW: what about an entry of you Piratero and Omni?

Very good if you manage to pack it. Don't forget mkisofs and some small free tools like TOSS.

Do you need us to set up a list of the tools we use ?

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

I am so nowhere near any point where I can code anything useful for the Saturn. I haven't given up completely though, and my school year ends in about two weeks, so I will experiment again soon. I wouldn't count on my entering a contest, though...

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

Rather than a contest, I will set up a "petition system". For example, "I will donate $20USD to the person that ports MEKA to Saturn with sound and a good framerate".

Other persons that will also like to see that can make aditional offers, and coders then can both take a project they know it will be appreciated and get some money/games/peripherals/whatever...

What do you think about people?

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

Sounds like some kind of mercenary system. Taking on risky programming jobs with pay for the Saturn community, I mean.

Yeah, I've thought about that, even considered the reverse method: I offer doing ??? for getting ? in return.

But such stuff lacks the competition that's going on in a contest and it restricts the developer very much. The problem would be to find someone who does the job.

I could image you combining this with the contest, something like: you give your price to that entry which is the most enjoyable for you.

Anyway, back to the contest.

Sponsoring:

I'm trying to find a sponsor who donates prices.

If I find one, the contest can and must be NOT Saturn only. If no sponsor can be found, it'll be Saturn only.

SaturnOrbit:

The easy Saturn dev all-in-one package will be called

SaturnOrbit.

I've setup a whole COFF and ELF toolchain, configured Dev-Cpp for these two compilers, adapted and recompiled every SGL example(well, except BIPLANE),

made some template for Dev-Cpp(but this mechanism to start a new project isn't as easy as I'd like it to be) and added a bunch of dev tools.

Currently my PC is compiling an installer setup file for the whole stuff.

I will try it out on a friends computer.

Here is some of it's content:

Well, as I wrote in another topic the ELF toolchain makes problems.

Compiled SGL binaries crash in emulators, because (I think) the conversion of the SGL from COFF to ELF isn't correct.

The SBL is just included, I only tried compiling easy stuff, but when it comes to AWK and GASM, I stopped for now.

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

That is a very interesting package. I would very much appreciate something like that -- esp. the Tools collection.

C4 - 2005 & 2006 discussion

I tried installing SaturnOrbit on a Win98 PC and compiling the examples worked right from the start!

Well, I almost forgot the problems with batch files on Win98.

None of my batch files are working on Win98, because of the lack of environment memory(even if setting everything to max). Satourne needed a reconfiguration, too. I guess that's because of the restriction to 8.3 filenames.

BTW: Is there any more stable Satourne version than 1.1p?

What about including the duck video devkit? I don't have it, all I remember is that it's been a huge download.

SaturnOrbit currently got over 70 ready to build examples, 400 MB uncompressed size and the download will approximately be 50-60 MB(much less than DCFreeDev).

Anyone interested to host the download?

As for a non saturn only contest : not interested. I would much prefere a contest without price.

Yeah, I'll have a version uploaded before announcing it officially. Just in case, cause I can't test all binaries alone.

But it'll take another 1-2 weeks, as I got 2 pages with ToDo notes.

That's okay.

But you know that the success of a contest is all about prices and not restricting the coders. If there is no price to win, you would probably be the only one making an entry  .

Wouldn't you be happy to get a price when it's done? :banana
