I haven't actually played it, but I'm guessing Gunstar Heroes for number of sprites at once.

I thought Gunstar Heroes was only on the Genesis and Gamegear...

I'll have to dig up a ROM...

I've never heard of an SMS port, but Sega's Brazilian distributor Tec Toy supported the SMS for a long time, and IIRC ported several games from Game Gear to SMS to keep supplying new SMS releases, so maybe this was one of them?
