I don't get it, how can people think a short, fat, plumber can beat someone with a sword almost as big as themselfs? >:/

Because the fat plumber crashes down hard after jumping several times his own height and wielding a sword almost bigger than yourself is quite hard.

Not to mention the fact that Mario has probably starred in over a hundred different games over more than 2 decades.

95% of those games are classics and loved by nearly everyone thta played them.

I won't get into Cloud/Square bashing as people are entitled to their own preferences and tastes.
