    Translating Magic School Lunar

Funding creates an implicit obligation to deliver, and people tend to start acting entitled. Better not to turn this into a job and just leave it as a hobby.

    Translating Magic School Lunar

Since it has been over a year since the last update, it seems like this is on the back burner (I would love to be proven wrong). It's understandable. These things happen. Priorities shift, people find new passions, burn out on old ones, deal with family and work problems, microscopic...

If you use something without a gradient, does it still butcher the edges? Like for example pure white letters on black background without the gray elipse?

That's an awesome write-up. Written well enough that even I can follow it:)

Then it would seem the answer to whether or not that hints at a way to replace the oddball retail FMV with Standard Cinepack is most likely "no". Any progress at all on the FMV front, though?

Just as a point of curiosity because I don't remember seeing it discussed; are the FMV sequences in Prelude identical to the ones in the retail game?

I take it the original code was disabling NBG2 and NBG3 because it's normally in 0x4000 and your change pushed the NBG0 tile data is pushed to the other bank to leave room for NBG2 and NBG3? (And I'm guessing that NGB2 and NBG3 are where the overlay text is loaded?) Are you editing this stuff...

Just trying to absorb what you're saying. You discovered that the MDT files have a mechanism for loading in a subprogram that will allow you to place overlay graphics in VRAM (or did you actually find a way to re-activate the normal text drawing code?). It sounds like it's not totally out of...

Saw this and got super excited because I thought you had found a way around needing to decode the obscurely encoded videos to add subs, lol. Still this is a really impressive achievement. This is shaping up to be more thorough than a lot of official localizations.

I’m fairly confident that the answer to your question is that if you are skilled enough to show a proof of concept that replaces and decodes a cinepak clip then your suggestion will be interesting, but until then it isn’t. I don’t mean to be critical, I’ve just been asking the same kind of...

Any progress with that pesky codec? It's beyond me to help technically but I've been trying to reach out to people who've done similar things and pointed them to the post on doom9. So far no love:( Would it help to try to track down someone who worked at GameArts at the time do you think? I...

    Translating Magic School Lunar

Was just wondering if there was ever going to be an English version of Lunar Magic School, and up this popped. Awesome to see so much has been done so far. Is this the best place to check back for progress updates, or is there some place better? I would love to contribute to the project, but...

Is the decoder a discrete executable or is it compiled right into the game executable?

    Translating Grandia

Just some musings on the funky codec issue, please bear with me. Has anyone looked at the video decoder embedded in the game itself? Is there *any* possibility that the codec embedded in the game also has the ability to encode? Acknowledging that it might be almost sacrilege to suggest, but...

Just to close the loop on this, I went back to re-verify my results. TLDR; I can get matching checksums from my original rips now. I made the faulty assumption that the data would be equivalent when extracted by different tools, and therefore the erroneous statement that I followed the process...

I used a variety of things. One of them was a plugin for 7-zip that treats image files like archives - I was actually surprised, but it showed the CRC sum as one of the file attributes. Another was the Windows checksumming tool (I forget what it's called). I can get you the actual names of...

I don't take it as condescending. Your instructions were clear and it was clear you went to great pains to make sure they would work. I followed them precisely. I've used these tools since the late 90's to manipulate CD images in all kinds of crazy ways. I *thought* I was pretty good at it...

I own three different original versions of the game, two of the first "Green" release and one of the "Memorial" package, no matter what settings I ripped them with my checksums would never match the ones in the readme. I finally broke down and just started downloading every single version of...

Honestly any Saturn you get that hasn't been recapped has the potential to have bad caps, no matter what model it is. The Saturns themselves may have been manufactured years apart but most of the capacitors were purchased in bulk and used by the factory for years. It's a crap shoot either way...

If your Saturn has through hole caps then yes. Console5 is awesome. If your Saturn has surface mount capacitors the SMD kit would be a more appropriate replacement. It requires rework equipment and knowledge of how to use it, but you really need that equipment to safely get SMD caps off...
