DVD burners reach physical limit

Toward the end of this year most DVD makers will announce burners that operate at 16 times the "normal" playback speed, copying an entire DVD in less than 6 minutes. Unfortunately that is likely to be the end of the line in terms of speed as DVD disks reach their physical limit. Like CD disks in a "52x" burner, a DVD at "16x" is spinning at 10,000 revolutions per minute as it copies the inner tracks. This speed is at the limit of current plastics technology. What this means for consumers is that DVD burners are soon going to be commodity items that will compete on price. This means that the price will fall. For details see

now we just need dual layer media to get cheap and have the media itself made to be a little more reliable.

When multi-laser technology is perfected for DVD, we'll see faster drives (you can get up to like 72x CD-ROM drives)... but yea, that should be awesome.
