Has anyone taken apart a VMU?

How hard are they to take apart and put back together.

I was thinking about painting some extra white ones to make them different colors.

My friend wanted to trade shells or something.. because something about he couldn't play chao adventure, and so he wanted to trade vmus with me, but he wanted to keep the blue case. So he took it upon himself to switch the two, but ended up having trouble taking his apart and ripped the speaker wire... realizing, i think, that if he continued, and ripped the wire out of mine, he wouldn't be able to play chao adventure with the noise/music so he gave me his blue one, the one he hacked apart.

I didn't really pay attention to what he was doing, as i was busy playing the blades of steel he gave me, so i'm not sure if it's impossible to remove the case without actually butchering it, but i can tell you that he's not too mechanically inclined.

I think you can if you're careful about it.

IIRC I've seen replacement VMU shells for sale somewhere, but I'm not quite sure where.

They're easy to take apart, as long as you mind the soldered wires. It's been a while since I disassembled one, but IIRC the circuit board is attached to the back shell by means of said wire, which might make painting a bit troublesome.

well here in NJ i've only got 2 gamestops out of 6 near me that still carry DC stuff and it's all cheap as hell...one is selling games and hardware for 30% off and the other is selling games for 30% off and hardware for 50% off!!!

just picked up 4 rumble packs today (whatever they are called for the dreamcast, i know the name is different) for $0.69 each...

So now i've got:

3 dreamcast systems

2 massive memory cards

4 VMU's

11 Controllers

3 AV hookups

1 RFU adapter

5 Rumble Packs

2 keyboards

1 vga box

1 4-in-1 adapter

and i've gone overboard with it only because the prices are so extremly low and i know that once they sell out of it they aren't getting it back and the only place i'll find stuff in the future will be yardsales where it will be half broken, or on ebay, where the shipping is almost as much as some of the items...
