I love SuSE but I'm swapping for a new distro...

Hey guys,

I need to try a different linux distro. I can't get SuSE to work with my sound card or my internal sound card. Other then that SuSE rocks. Any recommendations? Remember I'm a total linux noob. I'm probably going to d/l the live version of Mandrake and give that a whirl.

The crazy thing is I had the sound card working with Knoppix-std, and now that CD no longer boots...it gives me some funky error...what the hell did I break...

I have used redhat and mandrake linux, as well as FreeBSD. Redhat, unfortunately, has become a corperate-only distribution now, meaning you have to pay big bucks for it, but they do have a distro called Fedora. From what I understand, Fedora is made from joint efforts of some of the original redhat team, along with a redhat fanbase of programmers. I haven't tried Fedora yet though.

Mandrake linux is actually a pretty good linux to start out with. The setup disc will boot itself and get you setup, configured, and installed in no time. It has a nice look and feel to it. A lot of various programs come with the distro, and i've not had too many problems getting my sound cards configured with it.

Video cards, however, may be a different story, especially if you're wanting 3D games and such. I have had the occasional problems with programs crashing in X-Windows, using mandrake, probably a bit more than redhat.

I use Mandrake 9.2 (I think) on my 2nd computer, and I use it for printing documents, scanning photos, putting stuff on ebay, writing, playing games (not often, but the options are there lol)and a lot of the normal pc stuff.

Slackware supposed to be a really good distro as well, but from what I've heard, installing it is a little more advanced.

I've used Suse 9 and it works fine with my SBLive! 5.1.
