Is Sonic 3D better on Saturn

I haven't actually played it yet (I'm borrowing an original from an old friend, good lord those old Saturn game cases were huge - and believe it or not, all three cases he lent me are immaculate! Not even cracked!), but from what I've read, it's more or less identical.

ScAReD0o0RaBBiT (4:46:36 PM): is there a difference between sonic 3d for saturn and genesis?

ScAReD0o0RaBBiT (4:46:43 PM): besides the saturn version having load time?

Kismet Eclipsed (4:46:54 PM): yes

Kismet Eclipsed (4:47:03 PM): the bonus stages and the opening and closings to both games

Kismet Eclipsed (4:47:19 PM): The bonus stages in the saturn version are like the one from Sonic 2

edit:

Kismet Eclipsed (4:49:28 PM): the saturn version is much cleaner as far as music and video go

Kismet Eclipsed (4:49:40 PM): But the text parts of the game are replaced by movies

Kismet Eclipsed (4:49:50 PM): I guess besides the cool bonus stage that's it

The graphics are smoother and the colors are brighter on the saturn version. As far as gameplay goes, my memory is fuzzy, as I haven't played either version for a while.

Gameplay is the same. Basically it's a totally rehauled genesis Sonic 3D. Updated soundtrack and graphics... probably sfx too. This is an example of a remake done perfectly. The gameplay is the same... but that's a good thing.

And no, you can't save.

The music is completely different from the Megadrive/Genesis version, if I remember correctly. I really like the "rusty ruin??" music..

Yes, rusty ruin is good. Couple of other ones too. But the boss music sucks.

I didn't really feel that the in-game graphics were all that better, considering. The videos, sure, but its a Genesis vs Saturn. Other than the (CDA) music and bonus stages, I'd say the rest of the changes are minor.

werent they released at the same time? if so, does that really classify it as a remake? i would think it would be more like a co-release or something.

Yeah, I know  Just call it a suped-up version of Sonic 3D :devil

It's 24 days between the Genesis and Saturn-version, doesn't that make it a remake? 😉

That's one of the few games that give me a headache either it's on Genesis or Saturn. The colors on the Saturn-version are almost to extreme, but it looks good, as long as I don't have to play. 😀

Having played both, I can truly say that the Saturn version completely blows the genesis version out of the water in graphics and sound. The levels are much, MUCH nicer looking in the Saturn: no dithering, lotsa more detail and variation in the tiles, and there is a pretty deal of animated stuff in the backgrounds. The Genesis' levels are much more plain and bland when compared to the Saturn's.

Also, the Saturn version was NOT a port from the Genesis version, the games were co-developed. So both versions have different tile sets.

The Genesis tiles are not dithered versions of the Saturn tiles and the Saturn tiles are not copy'n'paste'edit froom the Genesis: both games' 2D graphics were made for each console taking in consideration it's capabilities. Also some levels in the Saturn version have some transparency effects in it (Rusty Ruins has a fog that grows thicker in zone 2), and some polygon objects, like the bridge in the first level.

The Sonic and enemy sprites also look better: more colors and smoother animation, and there is the 3D special stage.

As for the PC version... it is a port of the Saturn version.

i never noticed that u cant save, huh... i have both versions, imo, the saturn 1 is better... but the genesis id really cool, it feels alot different, almost like an rpg for some reason.... how about the game.com version. is it full speed?

It's like 10 FPS. And you can't see anything besides Sonic when you start running due to the horrible LCD refresh time 🙂

I haven't played any Tiger handhelds, so I can't say for sure....but LCD screen quality of game.com is just horrible.
