The U.S. Naval Research Lab has developed a method of sending messages over the Internet that allows the sender to remain anonymous. It is based on the concept of "onion routing" in which encrypted messages are sent via randomly selected servers or nodes on a network. At each node, part of the message is unencrypted, showing the instructions for the next hop over the Internet. Onion routing was devised to allow government employees to gather intelligence and engage in politically sensitive negotiations without fear of being traced.
