On Thursday 19 August the city of New York announced plans to lease space on top of many of its 200,000 lampposts. The space will be leased to wireless operators who plan to install 18,000 wireless access points across the city. The Manhattan area is already saturated with Wi-Fi hot spots, but much of the rest of the city is not covered. Another consequence of installing Wi-Fi access points in residential neighborhoods is that telephone companies will be able to offer Voice Over IP (VoIP) telephones to replace fixed landlines.
