The Sega Mega Mouse | A Look At Every Compatible Game by Jenovi

This seemed a nice place to put this... this post is not as entertaining as the above video, and only covers the Mega Drive/Genesis, but it does have tables!

Tested with: a Shuttle mouse (with a SAT->MD adapter), PAL Mega Drive 2 (revision: VA1.8) at both 50Hz and 60Hz, and a Mega Everdrive X7

Here's a quick overview of the mouse buttons mapping and controller port usage of the mouse compatible games on the Mega Drive, and a few other key details, ordered by release (approximately):

  • For almost all of the games: mouse movement is very smooth with my Shuttle Mouse.
  • Most games only use 2 buttons (left mouse button and right mouse button)
  • A few make use of the start button (sometimes only to start the game, sometimes to allow pausing in game)
  • Most games can work with the mouse in either controller port
  • Some of the USA releases use the middle mouse button, but those games have all 3 mouse buttons mapped to the same action
  • The Brazilian release of Body Count swaps the middle mouse button with the right mouse button from the European original (and is the only game to use MMB for an alternate function)

The following table lists issues, and other items of note, that I experienced during my testing.

Note: It is possible I have attributed the issues to the wrong item, due to lack of different hardware for comparison, e.g. low sensitivity in Wacky Worlds might not be caused by the game, but my mouse/Mega Drive instead.

Designed for trackball mode, vertical is inverted – to use mouse mode: Click globe -> Set option: Mouse X+Y- (click twice)
Mouse movement is a bit "laggy" - maybe the game runs at a low frame rate?
Wacky Worlds

Low sensitivity

* Having a mouse in Port 1 triggers the Mega Everdrive X7's In-Game Menu (workaround: Disable IGM or plug mouse in to Port 2)

^ The few games where I list "Vertical stutters" have jerky vertical mouse movement, horizontal movement is smooth (I have guessed the mouse is the issue)

If I ever get any other hardware to test, I'll post the results.

If any one else has other hardware configurations, it would be great to compare and make this data more comprehensive/refined.

You can look at the attached spreadsheet for an editable copy of the above results, as well as my results from running tests 1-10 from gasega68k's development of Wolf3D: wolfenstein 3d demo for sega genesis - Page 26 (read from the linked post onward to follow along)
