The entire game should be implemented now, however I have not done a full playthrough yet, only spot checked with setting different states in the code to debug. You will need to provide your own NES ROM. Any good dump should work. Simply replace the dummy FFANTASY.BIN file in the cd folder with your own US Final Fantasy ROM and run the build batch file or bash script depending on your OS. Keep in mind I don't have a Linux Machine, so the Linux build was AI generated and is untested. So let me know if there's anything that doesn't work.

PLEASE DO NOT UPLOAD THIS TO PLACES LIKE RETROGAMETALK/CDROMANCE WITH THE NES ROM INCLUDED! I deliberately didn't include that for obvious copyright issues. I've gone out of my way to make the build as idiot proof as possible. If you honestly can't run a simple build script then god help you.

More information can be found on the github page:

Controls are as follows:
  • D-Pad - Same as the NES Version.
  • A/C - Same as NES A
  • B - Same as NES Version.
  • Start - Brings up the Start Menu.
  • L - Brings up the World Map.
  • R - Brings up the Party Order Menu.
Optional bug fixes for the original game's logic are available in the Start Menu by pressing R.

Saving has also been revamped. Inns, Cottages, Tents, etc. still heal the party but no longer save. Instead saving is now handled through the Start Menu. You can save in any town or anywhere on the world map. There are 3 Save Slots available per Save Device. Devices supported are as follows:
  • Internal Save RAM
  • Backup RAM Cartridge
  • Floppy Disk Drive.
This fixes the following very irritating bugs I noticed:
  • When exiting battle the world map position was becoming disconnected with the scroll layer position. This caused you to be able to walk where you shouldn't have been able to and other odd issues.
  • When encountering a battle with more than one enemy type, enemies were overwriting each other in the buffer. This could cause it to appear as though you were being attacked by enemies that weren't there.
  • Pre-emptive Strikes weren't working.
  • When naming your characters if you cancelled out, the current letter wasn't being reset properly.
  • Various buffers and variables weren't being reset/cleaned up causing unpredictable behavior.

For this year's contest this now allows you to form a party, get into battles, and what not.

As before you'll need to provide your own NES ROM and replace it with CDMage.
