athlon64 question....

So I am looking to build a PC for a friend. He is wanting an Athlon 64. I haven't looked into these much as my old 2500+ barton suits me fine. I have a few questions....

-what kind of core is the best? newcastle or clawhammer? pros/cons of both...

-does the 1meg L2 cache really have that much of an advantage over the 512?

-socket types 754 and 939 if I am correct. 939 is the newer and the 754 is being phased out yes? Any pros/cons to either?

Thanks for the help, hope to hear from some of you smart bastages :).

sweet, the 939 and .9nm chips look like the way to go.

Maybe. Depends on budget, because 939 can't beat 754 bang per buck. Not by a good shot. But socket 939 is TEH WIN! if you can afford that platform.

Edit: Ah, to address the issue of cache. Yes, it does make a significant difference, but not usually enough to warrant to increase in price. Especially if you are seriously looking at 939, because IIRC, only the FX chips have the larger cache on 939. Can you say 'spensive?

ya, he is lookin to spend 1500 on a PC....the way it's setup now he has a gig of ram, a 3500+ 939 socket and a 6800gt. So far it looks purty good :). I am jelous, lol.
