differences with jap saturn LE titles

More saturn questions, this one is a mystery: Why on earth is there 3 different versions of Virtua Fighter Remix for US?!? I mean, there is a 'purple disc' one, 'blue disc one', and a 'red disc' one. Were they all for sale? or just the purple disc one (this is the only one which comes in the regular US Saturn box)? Is there any in-game differences with these different versions?
And also was "Virtua Fighter: CG Portrait Collection" a:
i) Sampler?
ii) Europe only release? (It wasn't released in Japan or USA)

Sorry I'm more of a specialist *cough* for japanese versions. However...
I never heard of such a thing (not a big expert in US stuff as I said earlier), but you might have misunderstood some text about the japanese version of VFRemix, which has three edtions (Red Obi, Blue Obi, and No Obi). That would be my guess : You got tricked by the japanese limited editions.
Another possibility is that VFRemix would be one of the first Net-playable games on the SS Netlink system, therefore two Netlink editions existed, one red and one blue.
But I'll stick with the jap LE mistake.

The answer is... iii) japanese only release.
VF:CG Portrait Series never came out either in the US or in Europe. It was separately sold CDs showing CG renders of the fighters of the Virtua Fighter series. If you bought all of them, you could order an extra CD called "VF:CG Portrait Series Final ~ Dural" which as you guessed contained CG renders of Dural (therefore this Dural CD is way harder to get than the other ones). IIRC Sega also sent you a plastic case with this disc to put the games together. And as usual the retailers such as Medialand did their own all-CDs package.

I suspect this because of this picture (When the saturn came out over here I recall seeing this image). This game also has a different product number than 'dural', it's product number being "610-6083" - something that most samplers have. I've attached an image of the game below.

All three versions are of the SAME EXACT game. The only difference between each one is the packaging. One was in the standard long case that US games came in, another was in a small jewel case and the last one was in a cardboard sleeve. You can see all three versions here. And I do in fact own all three versions so I do know what I'm talking about.
The long box version was sold in stores like normal, the small box version was what you got when you mailed in to Sega back when they were offering it and the sleeve one was a pack in version with the system. (The last two I'm fairly certain about but I could have gotten them mixed up.)
