Dragon Ball Z - The Legend - English Translation

Greetings!

After 2 years of and on and off work on this title, I'm finally ready to release my English translation work of Dragon Ball Z: The Legend on SEGA Saturn.

This patch is intended and was fully tested for the EUROPEAN version. Applying it on the Japanese version will not fully/correctly translate the game.

You'll observe I'm including 2 SSP files, one that is patched for the North American region and is intended for 60 Hz, the other is patched for the European region and is intended for 50 Hz. (The PAL version of the game has some minor optimization for the PAL version relating to the super attacks). They're the exact same translation wise though.

Do note that regardless of whether you're using the North American patch or the European patch, you should patch them over the EUROPEAN disc.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This patch aims to translate the European French version of Dragon Ball Z: The Legend into English, in an attempt to recreate the cancelled North American release.

As such, this release translates all the non-English assets that I've found. This however, does not include any of the game's voice work. I've left that exactly as it was in the European version.

While this release was primarily done by the work of one person (myself, wonder-inc). There are several people I want to give credit to in assisting me to bring this to completion.

- Pitito: Were it not for Pitito's work and documentation on his own Spanish translation of the game years ago, and his immense amount of help to me in the past year and a half, this project would have never gotten off the ground. All of the things he did for me simply cannot be summarized here. So I'll just say I give huge thanks and credits to Pitito first and foremost.

- Malenko: Similarly, Malenko's guide on SegaXtreme for replacing textures is what motivated me to give it a shot, Malenko similarly helped me with several issues I faced early on. So huge thanks to him too.

- Derek: Helped assist me very early on with coming across Pitito, as well as helped me out with the byte search utility that he created, and also got the word out when I was looking for assistance with the Episode title cards.

- Skankindead: Translated and proofread some text from the Japanese version of the game to use here.

- Recolor: Helped me out immensely with some issues I had with the title card injection very early on.

- Bo: Helped me find the save data text on the Saturn BIOS to translate into English, and looked into some things to assist me on the game's work.

- Danthrax: Helped me very early on with issue I had on my end with the CRAM2PAL tool.

- Ms Tea: Assisted in the my attempts to reverse engineer the episode title cards.

- Privateye: Fixed a bug with the North American Version not running on Mednafen due to an incomplete region patch on my end.

This patch was also made possible by the usage of:

HXD by Maël Hörz
CrystalTile2 by Angel-team
GC20 by D-BOY
Sega Saturn Patcher by KnightOfDragon
Yaba Sanshiro by devmiyax
Adobe Photoshop 2024 by Adobe
Microsoft Word by Microsoft
-------------------------------------
One thing I unfortunately did not figure out was reverse engineering the title card rendering in Story Mode, I had hoped to reverse engineer that function, but since I couldn't I just made do with the space provided. If I were to figure that out in the future, I might issue a later patch for that.

Enjoy!

P.S note I've made a very small patch to both files, as such the prior version 1.0.0 was removed and replaced with 1.0.1 as the default.

Awesome! I have to wonder, though:

The PAL version of the game has some minor optimization for the PAL version relating to the super attacks
What optimizations would those be? Personally, I'd rather have the extra dialogue from the Japanese version, but that's just me 🙂

In any case, incredible work. I'll try it out on my SAROO ASAP

So the PAL version (while largely unoptimized) does change the Special Attack voice clip timings as well as sound effects (to account for the slower PAL version)

That's why I made 2 different patches, because if I just forced the PAL version to be in 60 Hz, those would have been off timing-wise in NTSC.

Enjoy!
