Dreamcast 2 in the works?

SEGA Corporation has filed a new application to protect the trademark Dreamcast - sparking rumours that the Japanese publisher is planning on making a shock return to the console manufacturing market with the Dreamcast 2.

The application, sent to the United States Patent and Trademark Office's Trademark Applications and Registrations Retrieval (TARR) dated August 13 2007, relates to:

"Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs".

Web chatter suggests the proof is in the detail of the application - the original Dreamcast didn't have a floor mat accessory and the Dreamcast's Visual Memory Unit (VMU) is far from the flash memory cards we know and use today - although we'd say that the VMU is pretty similar to the modern day memory cards.

The filing could, of course, simply be a further effort from SEGA to protect the Dreamcast name. According to the USPTO the original Dreamcast trademark is still active. However, the two descriptions are very different. You can see the original trademark description here.

We've contacted SEGA UK for comment. We'll update you on this potentially megaton story as we get it.

Sounds like an interesting possibility. With the recent resurgence of Nintendo in the home console market, anything is possible. However, I don't see the market being able to support 4 home consoles.

this would make video game history! It would kinda be weird though since all of sega's main mascots r being played on other systems right now. i doubt sega would make a dreamcast 2 just because i really want them to make it, thats usually how it goes lol

Didnt Sega start selling reconned dreamcasts in japan not so long ago? Could they be planning a remodelled dreamcast in the same vein as the MegaDrive 2? lets hope if they do, they dont lock out homebrew disks

I cant really see sega battling it out with Sony, Microsoft and the new power of Nintendo. Sega lost money last year not made it, i don't think they could afford more debt, the pachinko division is definitely not as profitable as it once was.

Yeah, this is probably for merchandising the Dreamcast name more generally - branded merchandise like clothing, novelties, etc.

Maybe if we're lucky, ports/emulators of famous DC games for current platforms.

Or even more likely, to stop other people from doing it. You have to renew the registration of trademarks or you will lose the right to them. The original news "reporters" should also take a reality check - where do they think Sega suddenly found the cash to launch a new console?

if sega really did make another game system (i wish) my hope is that they do not name it the dreamcast 2. I have never liked it when new systems came out that had the same name as the old one but with a 2,3, or 360 at the end. not very creative. before u know it we will all be playing the playstation 13.

How about:

Super Dreamcast?

Dreamcast Advance?

Megadreamcast?

Dreamcast 256X?

DreamcastCART (a cartridge add-on to a CD-based system :biglaugh:)

Project Pluto (neptune was the last "planet name" right?)

Dreamcast 4-Ever (to jump past the missed "2" and "3", a-la X-box 360)

MegaDVD?

Sega Mark VIII?

Dreamfast?

I am also very much in doubt they are about to re-enter the console market, as much as I wish it were true.

I would geuss merchandising or such as well.

Still I am reasonably confident they will launch a new hardware platform in the distant future, maybe once they recoup losses or get a heavy financial backer.

I'm thinking they probably wouldn't try and flog a dead horse like the Dreamcast name, rather maybe lean on the SMS or Genesis/Megadrive brand.
