Brazilian dev Ângelo Pontes is working on a new wireless Dreamcast controller with a built-in color screen, VMU (8 pages for saving), and rumble.
He showcased it live on Luiz Nai’s YouTube channel (known for the Saturn homebrew Dragon Ball game). The controller will use a board similar to those from 8BitDo and will also feature a microSD card slot, a new hall sensor analog stick with a click button (like PS's L3), and bluetooth connectivity with a custom dongle.
They claim it’s virtually lag-free. In fact, they demonstrated it with a Virtua Tennis gameplay session, and you can clearly see the controller staying perfectly in sync with the TV. Ângelo even said he beat his brother while playing exclusively on the controller’s screen.

So, how does this work? All VMU images/icons are handcrafted by the art team on a game-by-game basis. For the user, it’s just plug and play. The new L3 button cycles through different color palettes (similar to the Super Game Boy), but you can also stick with the original B&W. You’ll be able to remap the palette toggle to another button combo as well. Since L3 is a new button, you can also map it to in-game commands with supported titles (like GTA 3). You can cycle the VMU pages holding Start and pressing Right/Left.

The controller can even be used standalone to play VMU games directly, and they teased potential emulator support such as GB, MS/GG, NES, and possibly Genesis. All of this will be demoed at the brazilian retro convention Canal 3 Expo on the 12th and 13th of this month, where attendees will be able to try it out.
The initial crowdfunding price on Catarse (brazillian CF platform) will be R$80.00 (US$14.81). On top of that, Ângelo is already teasing a possible Rev 2 in the future with a built-in mic for Seaman.
