Intel's new Wi-MAX

I was recently reading some of the info one Intel's new Wi-Max technology. It sounds both interesting and promising, yet disappointing (depending who you talk to). The idea of portible high speed internet, at a fraction of the current cost sounds very appealing. With all these new HSI technologies coming, it sounds as if we will finally see some major competition in that market. As a person who works for an ISP, thats both intriguing and frustrating. I personally see this as new competition, but the old guards, DSL and Cable seem reluctant to lower their prices. What do you think? Will these new technologies (ie. Wi-Max, BPL, etc.) catch on as fast as cable internet has?

I have not heard of this yet but if it does hopefully either the cable/dsl speeds will go up or they will lower the prices to keep competitive.

It would be better if they did both (edit: to clarify - 2-3 tiers). I'd be perfectly happy retaining my current speeds at a lower price, but Joe Richman across the street might want to upgrade to 8 mbit down, 1 mbit up, for $100 a month or something outrageous that I am *sure* Adelphia would charge. Although those pricks up top got busted for stealing, so now Adelphia is up for grabs...

Anyway, the only real future competitor for suburban/rural areas looks to be BPL. Wireless might not be so bad in a city, latency and bandwidth could probably be kept reasonable (although it still would take a lot of work to set up good coverage). But further out (again, like suburban), you have to run cables/use existing lines and then only break into wireless at key points. You can't just go wireless the whole way, speed and reliability would start collapsing pretty quick.

In closing, Adelphia sucks, and I hope BPL spreads like wildfire at gasoline field.
