Open Source Software Recommendations

I'm hoping to find a site that reviews and indexes open source software like Download.com and its copycats.

Sourceforge isn't very friendly when it comes to searching and browsing for software.

I'm looking for a more user-friendly alternative.

I want to try to use open-source for most of my (Windows) apps other than graphic design stuff.

oh yeah I forgot them -- thanks

they have a decent index so that's a start.

any additional recommendations would be appreciated

Hmm.. yeah, I guess Sourceforge and Freshmeat are pretty much the big two when it comes to finding pretty much exclusively OSS stuff. What type of software are you looking for in particular? I might be able to recommend some programs.

The main ones I'm looking for right now are an FTP Client (right now I use SmartFTP) and a good CD Burning program -- especially that does BIN/CUE well.

Well, the only OSS cd-burning progs that I know of are cdrecord and cdrdao. cdrecord has a Win32 version, not sure about cdrdao though. Out of the two, only cdrdao supports bin/cue, and the support it has is rudimentary- from the man page:

Code:
"Cue files may be used wherever a toc-file is expected. The correspond-

ing bin file is not taken from the FILE statement of a cue file but

constructed from the cue file name by replacing ".cue" by ".bin". The

cue file must have exactly one FILE statement.

Currently, following track modes are supported: MODE1/2048, MODE1/2352, MODE2/2336, MODE2/2352. The CATALOG, ISRC and POSTGAP statements are parsed but not evaluated, yet."

There are several frontends available, but again I'm not sure if any exist for Windows.

As for FTP clients, I use gFTP and good 'ol ncFTP myself, but the one that seems to come up as far as Windows OSS is FileZilla. I use an old program called LeechFTP on my Windows machine personally, but it's not OSS.

Actually ripping BIN/CUE is more important than burning them.

I have various programs I can bur BIN/CUE with...

also, I used FileZilla for a decent period of time, but found it kind of lacking in the features department. I'll take a look at the other ones you mentioned

Well, gftp is for Linux (stands for GNOME FTP). There's probably a Win port of NcFTP though; it's a command line tool but it has some nice features not found in regular FTP.

Ripping BIN/CUE eh? Hmm not sure on that one, I doubt there's any OSS that does that, but I could be wrong.

Hmm. I'm thinking Fireburner mighht support that, but I don't really know, all I really use are cdrecord, cdrdao, and Nero.

I thought about Fireburner, but it's shareware too
