Which Mortal Kombat game is the best?

I've read all the reviews on them, but none of the reviews really directly compare them to each other, so it's hard to tell what the really differences are, and which is better. Which have some charcters that other versions don't have, which have the best gameplay, the best bonus tricks, etc.

MK3 (genny)

Ultimate MK3 (genny and saturn)

MK Trilogy (saturn).

Or if your opinion is to forget MK altogether and play "_" 2D fighter instead, I'll take that too.

Thanks.

My personal favorite MK is MK3 (Followed by MK4). I prefer the MegaDrive version over all the others (Yes, even the Arcade and PSX versions).

MKII is best on 32X, although the Saturn version is arcade perfect. If you really want bragging rights, try to get the PSX version of MKII. Released only in Japan, and is VERY VERY VERY rare.

Ultimate MK3 is just an expansion of MK3 with more characters and backgrounds. Even though it is better than MK3, I still prefer MK3 over it. Scorpion, Kitana, Mileena, Noob Saibot, Rain, Classic Sub-Zero, Reptile, and Ermac join the roster (Ermac and Rain being new fighters. The others returning).

MK Trilogy is every single MK character and stage/background from MK, MKII, MK3, and UMK3 in one game, running under the MK3 engine. I have it for PSX, and the loading time bothers me. It's not really that bad, it's just that MK3 was a near launch title for the PSX (1995), and it loaded quicker than Trilogy (1997). The loading is worse on the Saturn (I've played it a couple times on Sat).

I personally say go for MK3. Although Trilogy is nice as you get it all in one package.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 for Genny because it has no load times...

I've got Trilogy for PSX as well, and the game is great, but as Cloud mentions, the load times are kinda in the way...

how's MegaCD Acclaim released in Japan?

I've been picking up any Acclaim JPN release for some time and been thinking of picking this one up...

(hopefully I will comes across True Lies & Virtual Bart JPN Acclaim releases at reasonable price one day...)

No Mortal Kombat is arcade perfect; they all have slightly worse graphics. That's because the arcade machine had some stupid resolution (400x250 or so), while every console and PC version is around 320x240, so the graphics got less detailed.

MK2 was a good fighter, with MK3 the game got a wee bit stupid (but still fun). So you might want to play MK Trilogy, which is the stupidest out of the three, but has the biggest replay value due to all the crap in it.

MK3 and UMK3 all have their own pros and cons though. They changed sooooo much with the different ports and updates of the game...

Not a big MK fan at all, but MK 1 and 2 (arcade versions) are the best. The later games just got stupid and didn't add anything to the gameplay.

MK2 for saturn and MK1 for Mega Drive, the rest are too crazy for me. MK Trilogy just seemed like a hole lot o'crap slapped together, think capcom fighting jam but worse.

I thought MK2 for the 32x was pretty awesome, one of the very few 32x games that seemed better than their 16-bit counterparts

MK2 for the Saturn was abslolutely awful. The sound effects were created by the game developers rather than using the sound effects from Midway and the load times are terrible, often freezing up when Sub Zero does his freeze thingy.

The other guy dying in the fatality literally sounds like a guy screaming, then gargling with mouthwash. Anyone reccomending this game for the saturn should take out the disk and play it again just to be sure.

The megadrive version of MK2 is great though, and remains one of my favorite games to play on the MD.

how'd you compare MK2 on MegaDrive and MegaCD?

I've been thinking of picking either of them seeing how cheap they are at around 500-800 yen...
