can I play the Japanese Phantasy Star re-release on an US system?

This may sound like a stupid question, but I recently bought the Phantasy Star re-release for Mega Drive on eBay for a song (14 bucks) Now, usually, when I play a Japanese game, I just snap it into the Game Genie and play. When I do this with PS1, I get nothing but a blank screen. Is this because of the converter inside of the cart, or is my game screwed up? If the Game Genie won't boot it, what could work? Thanks

Phantasy Star MD runs in SMS/Mark III compatibility mode; I don't know enough about the details of Game Genie to be sure exactly what's happening, but there's a very good chance that this combination (GG + compatibility mode) is either interfering with the initialization of the GG or of the Genesis itself. Also, you need a system that has compatibility mode in the first place (the Majesco "Genesis 3" notably does not).
