CeBit 2k2

It's my dream that Sega will quietly keep releasing games, slowly gaining back their respect and profitability, then in five years or so release a console that will be even more successful than the MegaDrive in the Sonic 2 era. Incredibly unlikely now, but everyone has to have a dream.

I still can't believe it's all over, there has been a Sega console in the line up of the day since 1986, and I've had them all... At least I've still got them all, with enough games to last a lifetime :) I certainly won't be buying a PS2. I think if this industry ever gets out of the rut it's in, and my passion for non-retro gaming is ever restored, Gamecube will be the one for me.

Just realised, I've ranted WAY off topic! ;)

I would imagine it's just a promotional item after the success of VF4, Rez and NBA 2K2.

If Sony bought Sega I would seriously find a new hobby - things are bad enough as it is without that happening.

ya i agree with you 100%

i love sega, and if SOny bought sega out, i would assasinate Peter Moore and all those other pricks down at sega headquaters.

oooo, all the times Moore screwed me and all sega fans, espiecally with shenmue 2 US version for DC..... i will never forgive him

I personaly hope that M$ goes down in flames this round of system wars, cause if they ever get to be the dominant v-game company they will never let it go. M$ has money to burn, and I think it would be a dark day for gamers everwhere if M$ was to take over the industry.

I always wondered why some people feel that Sony is somehow the "lesser evil" in all this? Speaking as someone whose company was once in direct competition with Sony, let me tell you this...

Microsoft wants (basically) one thing...the internet. Kinda greedy I know but what about Sony? Sony too wants to control the internet and would love nothing better than to have a million fools rush out and use the PS2 as an internet appliance. But thats not all...Do any of you realize how much of the entertainment industry Sony owns? Or the fact that they use that leverage to constantly push their products into your face? I'll never forget that episode of "Friends" where Eric was telling Chandler that the Playstation was cool! How do they do that...they own Columbia pictures which makes the show.

Imagine buying a CD whose artist is signed by Sony playing on a Sony CD player, then playing on your PS2 on your Sony TV connected to your Sony Amp. They LITERALLY want to control every aspect of your entertainment dollar. You think that Microsoft is evil? Fine...but you better feel the same way about Sony because their hands are FAR from clean!

Lastly, as for how all this can affect the gaming industry...well it already has. Sega's been forced out...It could be that it's just a matter of time before Nintendo does the same. In the end, Microsoft could also be seen as the savior from a one console world. Remember... competition is GOOD for eveyone and ONLY a company like Microsoft can compete with the likes of Sony.

Yeah, it'll be just like the good old days of Sega Vs. Nintendo, except without the annoyance of any actual game companies being directly involved in developing the platforms...

Are you kidding? They are allready in each and every computer over the world, and i really don't want them in my console.

NO ONE is clean. Not even Sega. Not even Nintendo.Everybody tries to sell as much as he can with anyway he can.Microsoft paid a germany wide very popular computer show to make Xbox Specials every day.EVERY DAY?!?Please. This is brainwash. They sell a Xbox BIBLE in Europe,a black book with a large green X on it,with the technical facts and Microsofts opinions on the Hardware. You know how much this piece of CRAP costs?15-20$!Yuuuhuuu they are the savior!Look at the game release list.Except of the Sega games there is nothing interresting for a typical console gamer.I don't need Shooters ala Wolfestein on a console. What about buying bungie? What about trying to buy out Sega? What about buying exclusive rights to the US Shenmue 2?I don't think that someone like that wants to bring back videogaming as it once was.Noone wants that.Even Nintendo bought back those Square games about to come.I don't think that Sony is better but please don't compare them with M$.

The Dreamcast was a great console. But after the show was over i had to buy a new console.Since the PS2 had more games i buoght this console. The choice wasn't bad since now i can play VF4,a game that no sega fan can live without.

I never said that sony was a "lesser evil", but M$ I feel is more of a threat to the industrys well being then Sony. Look at the past seven years that Sony has been making home consoles. Has the industry colapsed? No. Have we lost what used to be fun in games? Some may say so because of the transition from 2D being the main gener of games to 3D over the last couple of years. What Im worried about because of M$ entering the industry is that 1. They are going to try and buy out all the competition, as per their usual tactics. And 2. If they do end up controling the industry, how long will it take before console games degenerate into games like those seen on computers?

Ever since consoles first started becoming common, their games and computer games have always had distinct formulas to their geners gamplay. When you think "computer RPG" what game do you think of? do you think of somthing with strog emphisis on plot and cinematic experiences such as FF7, or do you think of somthing not quite so cinematic but with a bit more depth to its interactivity, such as perhaps, Baulders gate?

I think I have ranted enough, so im going to leave it at that.

"how long will it take before console games degenerate into games like those seen on computers? "

Oh come on, after sega i became a PC gamer and i'm building a PC into a sega!!! There is nothing wrong with PC games. I can sum it all up in two words

Half Life

From what i see, the PS2 is too old to compete in the console war. Its between the Xbox and the Gamecube. It never has been about the power of a console. Its the games that matter. One of them will have to invent a game that sells the console as Mario is to nintendo, and sonic is to sega. That one will win.

It never has been about the power of a console. Its the games that matter.

I'll have to disagree with that point - if it were true Sega would rule the world and the PSX would really be in Sony's 'Third Place' (whatever that's supposed to mean...stupid ads) behind the N64. Also if it were true Sony wouldn't have felt it necessary to spread that bollocks that PS2 could shift 70 million polys/sec...

The way I see it these days, neither the power of a console, nor the games matter. All you have to do to be on top is appeal to the sheep-like masses. If it is fashionable, they WILL buy it in droves. Sad but true. These people think that Crash Bandicoot games are better than Sonic and Mario games. Why? Because they are brainwashed by a biased media which has for the last 7 years been run by Sony. Unfortunately nowadays owning a Dreamcast, or confessing to playing Mario 64 doesn't get you cool points in the schoolyard. To most people simply fitting in with the masses is more important than great games. It's broken my heart in recent years to see the industry I've loved for 20 years turn into the shallow, commercialised farce we are now left with. :(

Yeah, and Game Boy was too old to compete in the handheld market about 8 years ago...

One of them will have to invent a game that sells the console as Mario is to nintendo, and sonic is to sega. That one will win.

This is basically what Hiroshi Yamauchi has been saying all along. He may be stubborn, but he tends to know what he's doing. Anyway, this puts Microsoft and Sony in a tenuous position - they don't really have a whole lot of respected in-house game development talent, so they end up relying on companies (Konami, Square, Namco, Tecmo, etc.) whose long-term loyalty is not really assured. Nintendo, on the other hand, has the man who made console games fun again after the flood of complete crap in the early 1980s.

Lets not forget that the trend of games has changed since the Sonic and Mario times...people want hollywood like heroes now, they don't want talking animals, and fat plumbers.Thats why Sega and Nintendo can't come back the way they were.Because the normal people have Nintendo in mind with fat italian plumbers and pokemons, while Sega is supposed to be the always loser.Thats what people tell in gameshops and i know since i hang at a gameshop for hours a day.The trend has changed a lot,if you look at the success of games like Resident Evil and the whole more movie like games like MGS2 you can see the trend going.

The PS2 may be too old to compete but as you said its the Software that counts and thats what the PS2 does best...the gamecube and the xbox are suffering in terms of 3rd party software if you except the Resident Evil series of the Cube and the Sega games on the Xbox.

First i consider myself a gamer ive had every system and addon with the exception of the 32x up until the DC. After that i had to decide on what to get next, and even though i had to wait awhile i ended up getting an xbox and feel great about the purchase. Most of you Ps2 lovers seem to miss the point. 1) the xbox is only 4 MONTHS OLD 2)Sony only CARES about your Dollars(its called business) 3) Most of Sonys exclusives are heading toward the Xbox anyway 4) The # of games means nothing if most suck 5)Look at the lineup games to come and the # between PS2 and Xbox are about even, though as far as the quality the Xbox has it hands down. That is why i waited on buying a PS2 for the Xbox and it was well worth it. I dont hate sony like fanboys do (long live the Mini-Disc) its just im in Dental School and could only afford one system though i might get a GC down the road for the first pary games

I don't hate Sony, Minidisc is an excellent piece of kit, and I would not own a TV that doesn't have the Sony brand on it.

I do however hate SCE for turning a great hobby into a pathetic popularity contest. 'YOU WILL BUY PLAYSTATION - THEN YOUR PEERS WILL ACCEPT YOU!' say Sony. Then see how the little sheep run to the store!

segasonic, I actually do agree with you, I believe that sega is doing this 3rd party developer stuff because they are slowly but surely plotting a comeback. Think of it, now that sega games are being released on every platform, there a wider range of people playing these games with the sega name on them, hence more people will experience and hopefulyl like them, so sega makes more games, goes back into profitability, then out of the blue releases another console and destroys everything available at the time.

Lets not forget that the trend of games has changed since the Sonic and Mario times...people want hollywood like heroes now, they don't want talking animals, and fat plumbers.

Oh, so success and failure are down to thematic elements? Give me a break. Some people will sit through a crappy movie, but I don't know anyone who will sit through a crappy, expensive movie that they have to work to advance. In essence, that's what bad games are - they make you work with no reward, and that's just no fun.

The trend has changed a lot,if you look at the success of games like Resident Evil and the whole more movie like games like MGS2 you can see the trend going.

Actually, I can't. MGS and RE were big, but I don't really see them as being part of a big shift in the industry. I find it particularly funny that you mentioned MGS2, since Metal Gear and its gameplay concepts are ancient (10+ years) by market standards. If movielike pseudo-realism is where the industry is, why the praise for Jet Set Radio? Why Crazy Taxi? Why Pokemon? Why Maximo? I'll tell you why: people like to play games that they can have fun with. If a fun game has a "cool" theme, that's a bonus. It's entirely possible that, given two equally fun games, people will go with the one that has the "cooler" theme. However, that's kind of an artificial situation; we'll just have to see how the market plays out...

I really hope Sega never releases another console and sticks solely to games. Too bad Sonic Advance is CRAP, though.
