I built the DIY box. I tried the one and two lens thing - I haven't experimented very much with it, but the two lens thing didn't quite provide the results as expected.
In any event, it's kind of dark, but it's a nice and cheap projector. I didn't paint the inside, nor did I seal up all of the outside. I tried Bushido Blade (PS) and unable to really make out the details, and ended up kannigasi. Ah well.
Next is the LCD projector...

ive got an old runco crt projector from like 1988, my dad grabbed it from a thrift store for < $30, he just wanted the lenses, didn't expect it to work. after a lot of tweaking it works, but the blue crt is all jacked up 
its been sitting in a corner of the dining room since i got that x1, it can't compare at all btw i'm not using that crappy little screen anymore, i just use my wall... oh, and fixing the convergence on any crt is NOT a fun activity

Nice pics.
I know what you mean about the CRt setup procejure.
I just installed one in a shop in my local town and mmmmmmmaaaannnnnn it was difficult.
We built our own screen (150 inch) from a pinters dust sheet as it is ok to piant over it without it cracking.
Also added a big black border to the image which really helped the contrast.
the unit was from Barco and originaly cost £7,000.
I bagged it for a freind on Ebay for £1000.
It is for a hairdressers in my local town,the guy wanted to attract more trade so we desighned a cinema in a spare room of the shop.
We had to build a 6 x 6 wooden frame to hold the barco unit in,Its so damn heavy.
It took me 3 weeks to finish instalment.
I use a Sanyo LCD at home but always think that CRT are still the ultimate.
Makes you wonder why they have to be so big?
Shurely some one could make a unit half of the size and give say a 150 inch picture instead of 300 inches.
Insisde i couldnt belive how close they are to a desighn of a normal tv.
£ lenses and 3 tvs and you have a massive screen

yeah, I got an nview spectra c off ebay. Now I just need to get a vga adaptor and a power cable this week so I can test it. After that.... it's on to experimentation.
I've been reading about the screen door effect on sites, and I hadn't ever really paid attention, but at LotR this evening I saw what they meant.

mines only 800x600 res, but i don't see any screendoor effect at distances > 5 ft. stopped seeing the rainbow effect after about a week, once i stopped deliberately trying to see it (look up info on DLP technology if you don't know what it is).
i don't think you'd be able to make a smaller CRT, for the same reason there aren't smaller CRT tv's. Also the projected image size is purely based on the lenses used + the brightness of the lamps/crts, not the size of the entire unit . setting them up is a bitch indeed, though. were you able to get the corners good? whenever i got the middle good on ours the edges were all out of whack, and the blue crt was so screwy that it was bleeding across the screen, so nothing looked right at all. makes a nice paperweight though, hehe. i would NOT wanna ceiling-mount that thing for fear of it bringing the entire ceiling down...
i'm looking at getting a dvd-rom now so i can play dvds in progressive scan to the x1 with my 5.1 speakers, compared to s-video and stereo from my $50 apex.

I did indeed have the same trouble with the corners etc,Bow,Scew,V- linearity,Keystone,Vertical shift,Blanking---The list whent on and on.
The Barco unit would not let me set it up like it stated in the instruction booklet.
It stated that you had to look down the front of each tube and alighn a grid that was on the surface of the screen.
I tried and tried and there was no way i could get this to work,In the end i used my own system of making 2 diagonal lines from corner to corner of the screen,Then marking the centre with some blue tack.
The Blue lens on the CRT units do all the shadow tones i believe.
Then i alighned everything to this point.
When finally finished the pic is stunning,the component lead really stands out.
I used S-vhs at first and this was average quality,Component is deffiantly superior and the way to go.
I use a Sanyo LCD projector myself,It is an old model but gives a very "FILMIC" quality to the image.
I once had Radinat silver gun running on a whopping 200 inch wall.The bosses were truly menacing.
The weight of the Barco unit i installed was extremley heavy'And like you say Ape i was concerned about the ceiling being pulled down.
The frame we built was over the top but the only logical solution.I also completely blacked the room out and installed a sound system using a Nad amplifier.
One of my other freinds has built a great cinema room in his house,he basically knocked a hole in a back room and placed a Sharp LCD projector in there.It fires an image to the room in front which has THX surround,The great thing is you never hear the damn fan noise of the LCD at all.I tryed to persuade the guy to go the whole distance and fully carpet the room but he has Magnepann panel speakers and a good hi fi set up,So he is rather reluctant.
I will go for CRT myself one day,

Alright everybody....
I got my panel in from the Ebay seller....
It is a Proxima Ovation 810... it was stated as not being tested and sold as-is so only one other person bid on it... i won the bid by $0.50 at $15.50 :devil
and to my surprise it arrived in PERFECT condition all cords cables included (some not even opened from there original pacakaging) :lol:
Went on a lookout for an overhead projector and found a used Dukane 653 for $125.... a bit pricey, but i didn't feel like waiting for shipping on ebay again and with 2 included bulbs and producing 3000 lumens i decided to just buy it.
Being christmas day I had plenty of time to construct the project and test it out a bit...
My father had an old projector screen in the atic from the 1950's...it is slightly yellowed and smaller than i need (40"x40") but it worked well for testing.
Price:
Proxima Ovation 810 w/ all hook-ups: $15.50 + $18.50s/h = $34.00
Dukane 653 (3000 lumen) OHP: $125.00 = $125.00

So i took the liberty of taking some pictures (my digital camera is VERY crappy) but you'll get the idea from them. The images don't do the picture quality any justice at ALL. Looks very nice in real life.
And for those that care Ryu stands 21 inces tall

Alright well since the projector screen was too small and croped the image size, i went to Wal-Mart and picked up a shower curtain liner for $6...
now i've got some more images most with a light on so you can see the curtain and the screen, in real life it's crystal clear i swear!

i just got a canon a80 4mp camera for my birthday, so i figured i'd take some better pics of my projector. the image is about 8' wide on my wall.

Zig, that's a great setup there, for a fantastic price. How much are the bulbs for that projector, by the way?
I'm either watching sports, or playing videogames, and my little 9 incher is getting on my nerves (after getting spoiled on my parents 42"). $150 is very reasonable (if I am so lucky...)

I also borrowed an Infocus 720 which had DLP technology.
Your projector looks very good,hardly any pixels at all and a very bright screen area.the biggest screen i ever projected was about 600 inches on the side of a neighbours house.
I put Sonic on the Megadrive on the unit and the main sprite wsa as big as his patio windows?I do like CRT projectors and recently installed one in a shop in my local town,Good pictures but such a pain to set up.
Do you use component video input on the Infocus?
We have only just started to realize how good this is in the uk. :huh

RGB is better than component (though probably not noticably), unless dvd is what is being displayed.
