Dragon Force II translation

Hey everybody.

I'm looking for assistance in getting a Dragon Force II translation project off the ground (or, if one exists already, I'd be interested in helping), but I have very little experience in ROMhacking in general, zero on Saturn, and my knowledge of Japanese is limited to Kana and about 100 Kanji, so it's taking me a while to get some momentum going. I'm eager to learn, though.

I'm clueless when it comes to handling the actual ISOs in particular. If I try to extract files from the disc image, edit them, and then put them back in, the new disc won't load on either my Saturn or SFF 0.7, so right now I'm editing entire 500+ MB binary images at a time and reburning to CD-RW after every edit (don't know anything about virtual drives yet, and I don't have a Sat emu that loads binaries). This is incredibly slow. What guides or programs should I consult to speed this process up?

DF2 seems to be a good title to start with. All of the game text seems to be encoded in Shift-JIS, so it's relatively easy to seek out specific text. Are there any hex editors out there capable of displaying and accepting *input* in S-JIS as opposed to ASCII, or any way that I can use a Thingy-style table to accomplish this in another editor? Right now in order to edit text, I load a table in Windhex to look up Kana, but I can't edit it in that program, so I have to load the same file in another hex editor, lookup the offset for that particular text, then manually input the hex values for alphanumeric characters in S-JIS. What programs can I use to come up with a shortcut for this?

Right now I'm looking through the different .BIN files on the disc to try and see what text is stored where. I've made a few edits already, but I haven't really dug into the game much yet:

About virtual drives, Daemon used to be a decent virtual drive tool. try it here http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/portal/portal.php, it's usefull and it's free.

As for translation, I used to follow that Dejap stuff (http://www.dejap.com/) for the Snes, but I figured out that it's not just a matter of text translation. If you want to do it properly, you have to restyle/adapt/alter/redo/whatever some UI and layout stuff as well...

But the idea is great of course, translating such a great game :agree (well, I think it's a great game, my japanese sucks big time)
