Galactic Battle Cheat

Gamefaqs has a cheat for Galactic Battle - hold L + R + C + Left at the title screen, and press start. Gives 8 credits instead of 4. But I can't get it to work. First off, there's about 10 different "title screens", I'm not sure which one is being referred to. I tried them all, and none seem to work. Unless the credict counter remains at 4 even though you really have 8. Anyone ever get this code to work?

I also have a question about the "Arcade mode". I turned my TV on its side so I could play the bonus-size arcade mode. This really kicks ass. The only problem is that when my TV is on its side, the colors get all psychadelic. It actually didn't affect gameplay at all, its kinda a neat effect. It looks like the same thing when my computer monitor gets moved, and I have to degauss it so that it can adjust for the change in nearby magnetic fields. However, my TV doesn't have a degauss button.

Also, on other thing i noticed, was that the "flowing" backgrounds in Galactic battle must use a scan-line trick, because een when you turn the rest of the game into "arcade mode" (TV on its side), the far-back flowing background is still normal-mode (even though the rest of the layers and sprits are all arcademode).

Thanks,

JMT.

I assume you're talking about Galactic Attack/Layer Section. Not sure what you mean about scanline trick.. the game uses scaling to a large extent, and only goes real full rez when playing in tate mode. You'll notice this in just about every game that has a tate mode option.

With regards to the color problem, try this... unplug your TV. Wait 15 minutes. Flip TV. Wait 15 minutes. Plug in. You shouldn't have any problems at that point. The color problems have to do with the magnetic orientation of the set, and after you've powered down for a while, it should work OK.

I think I know the cheat you're talking about as well... IIRC, you have to do it at the title screen that says 'Galactic Attack - press start'. Although if you have an AR4M+, it's much easier just to enable it that way (cheats should be built into the device).

Yeah...Galactic Attack. I keep messing up the name in my head.

I just thought that the farthest-back flowing background might have something to do with scanlines. It doesn't scale like other sprites. It's like the old genesis effect where the horizontal lines of the image just flow and wave left and right. I just noticed that when I put it into arcade mode, even though the rest of the sprites rotated 90 degrees, that farthest back flowing background didn't. It stayed so that the movement/flowing/waving of the horizontal lines remained in line with the scanlines.

Like there's a part where you hear a voice that says "making left turn", and in normal mode, you see the background flow to the right like you'r emaking a left turn. But in arcade mode, with the TV turned, the background flows up now, and is non-rotated. Could just be a programming choice to, or something they just plain forgot about. Or I could be losing my mind. I'm sure that's never happened to anyone on this board 🙂

Yeah, that game in particular uses a weird combination of scaling and other tricks. I think the part you're talking about is just 'reprogrammed' for hori mode. I've played the arcade version (in MAME), and the tate mode on the Saturn version is pretty darn close. There are a few other things you might notice that are different as well- like in the first level, when playing in tate mode you can see the asteroid chunks break apart from the planetoid, but in hori mode that part is clipped. Same thing with the first boss, he's significantly clipped off in hori mode.
