Genesis video pinout

The standard 8-pin DIN that you buy at any electronics shop has the pins too close together for the mega drive 1. They have to be severly bent and forced into the unit. Any thoughts? Does sega have a specialised 8-pin connection?

there are two types of 8 pin din plugs. U shape and round shape. only one of them fits, I believe the roundish one does.

Yes, Sega has used proprietry connectors on just about all of their consoles (#### them :(), but if you only want comp. video you can cut off two pins to make the fit a little less snug.

nope.. the genesis 1 plug is a standard plug, easily available in any electronics store here.

It's actually the U shaped 8-pin DIN that's found on the Genesis, whereas the roundish one is found on the Neo Geo amongst others. Both are standard plugs, as is the mini DIN plug used on the Genesis 2 etc. - the only Sega consoles to use proprietary A/V plugs are the Saturn and Dreamcast.

The 8-pin U-shaped ("offset") plug, suitable for the Genesis/MD 1, can be bought from http://www.maplin.co.uk - the order code is FG40T.

You only need the 8-pin plug if you're wiring up a RGB cable - if you're doing a standard composite A/V cable, a 5-pin or 3-pin DIN will do.

Sorry I thought he was talking about the controller port wasnt ready close enough .

The video connections common to , the master system and neo geo used this same one , as well as some old computer I used to have...

close to keyboard kind at least looks wise

Well, certainly the one's I've found are just a little too small, leading me to believe that Sega used a slightly altered plug.

I built a whole bunch of rgb cables myself, the plugs fit perfectly, no bending involved at all.. the right plugs are easily available.
