Just read the post on the forum about your problem witht the Dreamcast.
I had a similar problem and it was with all types of media both backup and original.
I found out that the dreamcast does tend to have problems with the lid.
When it is closed sometimes the connector which tells the machine to boot breaks and does not make contact.
I load the games by putting something on the lid so that it just closes almost all the way but is never fully closed.
This i find works and i have used it for over 6 months.
Other than that i wouldnt imagine that burning a disk to far etc would really hurt the machine,The only area i would also look at is the condition of the laser lenz.
