Some have gotten ripped off on eBay for a lot more money.

For instance, there was a story going around about people getting ripped off for buying HDTVs - however, the story goes on that they had to wire transfer money to the Czech Republic. It's hard to be sympathetic for these people - you need to step back and use a *little* common sense once in a while. Same goes for Nigerian email scammers. Gah.

But as for this guy, that's some lousy business. Looks like he/she had positive feedbacks and decided to start ripping people off.

It's possible someone hijacked this account and ripped you all off. Then again, maybe not. But yeah, that $2300... wow... It's not that you can't spend that kind of money on eBay, but if you do, use an escrow service. Oh the other hand, maybe $2300 is nothing to that guy. But if it was nothing he'd probably just buy the damn camera from somewhere. Ugh.

It's not eBay's fault though. Ebay does provide a useful service. People just have to take the appropriate methods to protect themselves. And looking at the auction you bid on, mountaindud, "Due to disk duplication, there are NO RETURNS on this item"... Yeah, it also says it comes with a box and a manual that you didn't get. But that right there should have been a red flag.

yeah it's possible for them to sell some cheap stuff for a while (also buy a lot of stuff), build up feedback, and then rip people off.

So what I do is I do a sampling of the items that they have sold and got ratings for. If they are similar items for prices in the range I expect to pay, then it should be a same bet.

Also, for larger items, pay with Paypal using a credit card. Paypal isn't 100%, but it still helps, plus you can try to get your credit card company in on the mix.

I know I really need to start reading auctions more carefully. But on the other hand I shouldn't have to check if I'm buying a pirated game.

yeah you do need to read carefully just because there will be some people that break the rules.

Racket is right, when you buy from individuals over the internet, you have to exercise caution. About those Nigerian scammers, I recently got a pretty good one from some-or-another "Nigerian Princess".

There are a million and one variations, but the basic form is pretty much always the same. Someone has acquired / had to hide away a large sum of money, and they need a foreigner / stranger to sign for it in able to get it out / recover it because of legal complications, etc. Upon giving them your bank account number they will give you a percentage, etc. Sometimes they use real people ex. I got one at work a while ago that was supposed to be from the wife of Jean-Bertrand Aristide. It's surprising to me that they're still doing it after all these years, I guess some people are gullible enough to fall for anything.

Yes, that is correct, but name you're thinking of is Ogoni - the Ogoni Kingdom. It's a magical place, where money grows on trees, and princesses are held captive. Basically like Mario, only with bank accounts.

I've got something else to bitch about, but rather than start a new thread I'll post it here. I went to Radio Shack today to get Progressive Scan/ Component Video Cables for my new DVD Player. I get there and find what I want, and they are listed at $38.99 :rant. So I leave the store all angry-like. When I get home I thought about the concept of 3 video cables instead of 1, for a second, and I grab 3 regular RCA cables from the closet where I keep such things and hook the whole thing up. It looks amazing, and it cost me under a dollar instead of forty dollars. It all worked out I guess, but it still makes me angry.

Cables are all basicly the same. The only major difference is the connectors and the tyoe of shielding. I use RG6 (coax) with RCA connectors crimped on. I get a better picture than the Monster cables I was using before.

Is quality with coax significantly better that the regular wire in RCA cords? That sounds like a pretty cool idea.

Depends on the RCA and coax cords being compared. You can (and should) use upgraded cables for component video, not stuff intended for analog audio/composite video. Whether you choose to just use heavier RCA cables or crimp RCA ends on coax is up to you. If you choose coax, you can't go wrong with some nice quad-shielded RG6. That stuff is awesome. I don't know how much that would cost you locally though...

It always helps when you work at the cable company. I get the stuff for free. I didn't even now they were able to do that. One of our techs was telling me about all the work they went through to get a bar up and running for just digital cable. And the RG6 solved the problem.

RG6 is standard, by now. My point is that there are different grades of RG6, just like there are of RCA cables. My local cable company uses RG6 for everything - but the quad-shielded cabling I used to replace much of what is in my house is noticeably thicker than anything else, and has made previously unwatchable channels look pretty good. I can't get any better than the source line outside the house, obviously, but I can prevent the signal from degrading with good cable, better splitters (I've had very good luck with Acoustic Research units), and a digital booster from Motorola. I originally tried a standard booster, but while it helped the analog channels on the TVs, it screwed with the cable modem's upstream signal strength. The digital booster doesn't interfere at all, and improved the downstream reception.

The only problem I see with using decent coax over wires that come RCA is thickness and flexibility. They're great, but having 3 more thick, not-incredibly-flexible wires may or may not suit your situation. That's something you're going to have to look at. You can use your existing wires for the 2 audio outputs, obviously, unless you have the equipment for digital.
