My only question is, where's the sound come from?

One thought... It would be awesome to have stereo sound come from this thing without headphones. They could put two speakers, one on each side of the top screen.

Looking at the images, I would guess those indentations on both sides are for the speakers. Was the DS playable at E3?

They input the sound directly into your brain via microwaves.....

To answer your question, yes they were playable.

Those cartriges look like they could break with a twist of a hand, but I do hope they reinforce them with something strong.
