pal saturn with action replay plus

hi,

i have an pal saturn model 1 with the action replay plus (4mb) . I have now radiant silvergun as an usa version (patched , origin was japan). my question`s: can i play that game in 60 hz ? can i do that with the action replay?(switch in the menu or something) Or do i have to mod the saturn ( i use the swap trick). Infos about the mod ? where? Is it hard to do, because i can solder a litttle bit by myself.

thx for any answers.

the 50/60hz thing is controlled by the hardware, there's a 'jumper' on the Saturn's mainboard for that. I cant find any links to modding pages right now, but I know that if you have an early model Saturn (manufactured in '95, for instance) the 60hz mod is actually very simple. Just bridge the solder spots on the bottom of the mainboard marked as 'JP1'. Or you could solder a toggle switch to 'em.

the saturn has oval buttons , PAL (MK-80200-50)

for this model, which points do i have to solder that all games are played in 60 hz ( i don`t a switch cause i have only one PAL game) ??

thx for links etc.

If you read the faq on that site. Or if you just go google, you will find that in all saturn revisions, the jumpers are the same, it's just a matter of location.

ahhh, ok then. thx

But i have a new problem: Today it was my first time to play a burnt game for saturn. i don`t have a modchip so i used the swap trick (successfully). it also worked the second time i tried and the third.... etc etc. no problem at all. But the burnt disc(s) were always spinning very fast when booting up (and very loud -> but when the game succesfully run, the noise was normal). But all in all , everything was working and i wasn`t wondering. Now a few hours later i wanted to play again a game, but since then the burnt dics aren`t loading anymore -->> the disc is spinning very fast and laser makes strange and loud noises. the toc can`t be read so i don`t even have a chance to swap to the orginal game (for replacing).

BTW, originals are booting/working fine

I have also tried different blank disc`s

any1 got an idea?

perhaps your timing is off? I've never been one to use the swap trick. I think it also helps to have the burned copies be the correct region for your machine, but I could be wrong.

Hi MataKilla,

I also have a Sega Saturn(pal) and run it in 60hz mode.

The mod is very simple.

What your looking for is 2 jumpers marked JP1 & JP 2.

Some uk saturns were different pcb desighns and Sega moved these jumpers around on the board.

Also here is a simpler way of doing the mod,I know it sounds weird but it does work,I guarantee it.

Once the 2 jumper settings are found you can simply use a standard HB pencil and "etch" the joints together with the tip of the pencil.

Scribbling a link with the pencil will join the jumpers up and give you 60hz,Even on pal games.

The carbon in the pencil acts like a conductor,No soldering is required.

This can also be done to the region hack for jap/Uk/Usa games.

Great thing is if you ever want to return the machine to its original format you can simply rub the etching off the board.

With regard to disk swapping i find that soem games are real picky and others very easy.

I leave the lid off the machine half of the time as i can see when the laser changes etc.I find that certain disks refelct light better than other cheap varieties.

If you are still having problems it may be down to the disk itself or an alteration of the Lasers alighnment.thsi is a amall orange wheel at the back of the laser mechanism.

WHEN POWER IS OFF you can turn this whell very slightly and it alter the lasers angilar velocity.

Hope this helps you out,

Cheers,

Ian. 😉

thanks very much @ croft. that was exactly the description for the 60 hz mode i was looking for....

now today im going to try this out and also orange wheel for the lasers ( i think i'm also trying out some different blank cd's -> i think verbatim are very good)

tommorow i'm going to post my results of the mod an the laser adjustion

you mean, you're going to screw with the pot for the laser intensity? Be careful, as it's my understanding that messing with that is a good way to destroy the laser.

hey croft, where is JP2 ??

i found only JP1 (at the back of the board in the right upper half - 2 points that i' should combine with the pencil, right)

BUT i searched half an hour for JP2, i can't find it..

BTW, the orange wheel worked for me, i changed it for about half an milimeter and now ervery copy runs perfect.

Update:

Now i have combined jp1 only with a pencil. the result is flickering all over the screen, but the saturn is working (you can see the image of the menu/game behind the flickering) and there is sound.

I think it's because of the pencil. Now i try to solder it....

updates will follow, any comments are welcome

Update II:

i have soldered now jp1 one, but the result is the same. i heard that this signal is perhaps 100 hertz now?! my 100hz tv broke since a week so i can't test the result on a 100 hz tv ; only on an normal 50 hz -> flickering like descirbed above.

YEEEAAHH, *working*

->> everything is working perfect now !!!!

i followed this method:

extract from Acidics in an other thread some time ago

"With the very early model 1 saturns, connecting the JP1's together just makes it run wayyy to fast.

You need to find a chip named IC14 and find pin 79 on it.

Slowly heat up the chip with a soldering iron and with a pair of tweesers, lift up pin 79.

Then connect it to the 5V line on the saturn and it should run at 60 Hz all the time. e"

Thats absolutely correct!!

i did this and everything is working fine.

now every copy boots (because of changing the orange wheel) and everytime in 60 hz.
