Password protecting CD/DVD-R

Is there a program that password protects blank media when you write something onto them? Besides burning a password protected *.RAR onto a disc.

Burning your pr0n collection or something? Hmmm, I can't think of anything. There are encrypted filesystems, but I don't think they'll work with write-once media. Using a RAR file or just a bunch of PGP encrypted files is probably your best bet.

No, I'm not burning my "pr0n" collection. I just thought this would be a cool idea for other "sensitive" files.

Apparently he's got enough free space for his pr0n. For now, at least. Anyway, the only thing I can add to the archive suggestion is to make it a self-extracting archive. That way you can pop it in any PC, and as long as you have the password, you're good to go.

Edit: Also, if you've got free space on the CD/DVD you're burning, you could use the extra space for a large recovery record. Extra redundancy.

I was looking at Plextor's new line of DVD burners the other day and I noticed that Plextor's drives have a feature called SECUREC™. It might be what you're looking for. 🙂

SecuRec is another new feature of PlexTools Professional. It allows user to password protect the data of their CD-R from unauthorized or unwanted access. Protection activation and password setting can be done only through the SecuRec function in Plextools Professional, bundled in the retail package. Writing and reading of a SecuRec disc is limited to the Pemium drive. A SecuRec protected disc can be accessed only when the password is known. Otherwise, the Operation System will give a read error upon accesss attempts of the disc.

To read SecuRec burned discs, you'll need the Plextor Premium or SecuViewer software (and the password, of course 😉).

Here's another nice feature of Plextor burners:

GIGAREC™ allows high capacity storage up to 900 MB on a 700 MB disc.

My next burner will be a Plextor. :lol:

The password protection sounds interesting. It'd be better if it didn't require you to have any software on the computer you were trying to access it from, or to have to use their burner period. If you want to continue using your existing hardware, you might want to check out CryptCD. I have never used it, but someone else pointed it out to me and it looks pretty damned nifty.

As for 900MB on a 700MB disc, I think at this point if I really needed the storage I'd probably use a DVD-R (since the drive can do those too). I mean it's neat and all, but it'd still take 5 discs to match one single-layer DVD-R. I guess if you want to make it extra hard for people to get at the data, you could use GigaRec, encrypt the disc, and have the disc you've encryted contain a passworded archive broken into 1000 files. 😀
