SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

In the list below you'll find a lot of games with cool graphic effects done by the basic SNES hardware & without special on cart chips.

I see a lot of games with cool graphics (read: good artwork), but not many that have impressive effects. In particular I would say that (from memory) Axelay, R-Type 3, and Rendering Ranger R2 looked like they were doing interesting things. GundamWing Endless Duel did some impressive things to save ROM space I think, though the results aren't readily visible. Super Castlevania IV certainly deserves honorable mention for the "revolving corridor" level, which was very neat both artistically and technically, but that caused massive slowdown as I recall. Yoshi's Island obviously has some awesome 2D effects, but it uses a SuperFX2.

How about F-Zero, Mario Kart...

I can't think of any more. I'll have to play some when i have time.

But what's your favorite list?

SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

Now remember I am basing this on games I played back then, not since then.

my fav list on genny/SCD (I include Sega CD because this is what got me to love my Sega the most)

Genny

Sonic 1 - fast paced, great colors

Sonic 2 - amazing speed, balanced difficulty, debug was the best

Sonic 3 and knuckles - Amazing sprites, great colors, HUGE game with killer soundtrack (I put the two together cause its best that way)

Shadowrun - ADDICTING

Phantasy Star 4 - Beautiful anime cut scenes, great story

Toe Jam and Earl - come on' its TJ+E, need anymore then that

Decapattack - long, hard, addicting gameplay, cool idea, this is platforming at its best

LandStalker - The only thing that the SNES would do to this game would make more colors... other then that this is on par with any game similar to it on the SNES! Better then Zelda IMO

Streets of Rage - IMO kicks Final Fights ass any day! These games just ROCKS!

Maximum Carnage - HARD!

Kid Chameleon - HARD!

Contra Hard Corps - I like Super Contra 3, but this game was faster, more baddies, better soundtrack and was HARD! I still have not mastered it. and the stuff they pull of is just amazing for the genny.

Earthworm Jim - (i also include this for Sega CD cause I owned both) I personally like this much more the the SNES one... the colors seem to bleed in that one in my opinion.

Earthworm Jim 2 - I had this first on genny then had to buy it for Saturn... the sprites in this are awesome, the backgrounds killer, just like the first one its just FUN and again I think it looks better on genny.

Herzog Zwei - Original idea, pulled off with perfection... this is what got me into strategy games.

Mickey, Castle of illusions - this was GOOD, you have to admit it!

Vectorman - How could I forget Vetorman! grrrr, great f'ing game. I didn't own it though, thats probably why. My neighbor did and I whooped the game for him cause he wanted to know if it was a winning cart. it wasn't... grrrrr!

Sega CD

Sonic CD - My favorite Sonic game in ALL! beats sonic 3 and knuckles by a little bit. Those special stages are amazing, Metal Sonic looks soooo cool, the anime cut scenes kick ass, the soundtrack is beautiful and and and IT ROCKS!

Lunar - This is what got me for RPG's

Lunar 2 - EVEN BETTER!

Earthworm Jim SE - I seriousily carried this CD with me to listen to in my discman, and the added level and the kick ass ending for easy and hard were SO cool! IM THE BEST!!! you can't take that from me, Shiny says so!

Mickey Mania - HOLY SHIT! this game was pimpin' shit, the first level how it starts... superb. and the difficulty was great, that level where you had to climb up the shaft to get away from the fire, wow that took me forever to beat. I would play this game while spying out the window for when my mum got home cause I was grounded.

Snatcher - and I hate digital comics! this has to be good for me to like it.

Eternal Champions - I put it here although I still liked the genny version... this one is killer though! Beats MK out any day IMO.

Okay, im at work and its late. I should cut this short. These are the most memorable though for me, if I could pull them from memory so easily they had to be the best IMO. Oh and actually I was one of the few to REALLY like Sol-Feace...

SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

Yes Castle of Illusions was awesome & so was Sol Feace. I loved the cool video cutscenes, especially the one before level 2 when the ship blasts into the space factory.

Yeah there was a US release & it was much better than the SNES version... 😉

The humor in the cutscenes & video is very good. Quite funny.

Good english translation.

I've completed it.

The original Cotton wasn't even released on it, only the crappy Marchen Adventure Cotton 100% (it was later rereleased on the PSX too).

Woo! You got the genre correct 😛 And IIRC, you (previously) got Shining Force's correct also. Your two for two! :banana

SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

What is Snatcher mistakened as? I can't see any other genre it could fall in. I hardly can see people messing up SF... but I give leway there. Snatcher can ONLY be a digital comic, I see no other possibility.

SNES, Genesis & PCE Showdown!

I guess you could consider it an adventure game. Especially since the only games I remember having been referred to as 'digital comics' before Snatcher came out were those Questprobe games on the C64.
