It's the same as it was before. I've been trying to fix bugs as well as get the right text in the right spots as there's still points where there's untranslated text that needs to be fixed.
 
Howdy, I'm patiently looking forward to this project, I was playing the 3DS version on my PC but I'd rather play it on my phone without the hassle of installing a 3DS emulator. Keep up the good work!
 
I've been obsessed with SMT lately. I finished Vengeance, I'm currently playing Strange Journey, and I just ordered Nocturne HD Remaster. The first SMT game that really caught my attention was Soul Hackers, and I'm so grateful that this project exists.
 
Has there been any progress on the translation? I recently got a handheld console with emulators, including one for the Saturn, so I started looking for a localization of Soul Hackers.

It's in the same place it was. With Sakura Wars 2 finishing up I'm going to try and focus back on this and Grandia Digital Museum after taking a short break to regroup and refocus. Digital Museum is probably going to be the higher focus at the moment since I now actually have a translator lined up for that.

In the mean time if you just want to play Soul Hackers on the go, you can always just play the 3DS version.

Finally had some time to dig back into this. I think I have most of the Demon Fusion text sorted out now, as well as the bulk of the Zoma name entry screen:

I need to clean up the white space characters in the name entry screen along with some formatting in that screen and the other menu screens. After that I just need to get the graphics for the stat wheel imported and it should be all the text that needs replaced for this part.


This doesn't mean this is anywhere near close to being done however. There will need to be more play testing to verify all the Japanese text has been replaced. Once that's done work on implementing the VWF system can begin. I'm hoping some of the severe formatting issues in the menu will be alleviated with the VWF system but it will probably need some manual editing/adjustments. After that then it will be even more play testing to verify the VWF isn't breaking anything.

Just joined the forum to say I am very much excited for this and thankful someone is working on it! I am a recent Saturn owner and SMT is one of my favorite series, getting to play this in English on Saturn will be a huge pleasure when it's eventually finished and I await it excitedly 🙂
 
Hey, great work there.

If you're looking for a tester hook me up, I've already played through the game once (Saturn version) and I'm dying to find an excuse to play the NG+ so this might the opportunity to make sure your translation holds in the NG+ as well when the time comes.
For the record I don't know Japanese, I played using ztranslate AI translation (which is usually better than the "holding a phone over your screen" method you mentionned in the Grandia Digital Museum thread, both in terms of interface and actual translation; Grandia Digital Museum that I also played that way btw), and my only hacking experiences have been with the NES and a bit of SNES; but I tend to attract bugs in anything I play.
 
If you're looking for anyone to test this so far, i've been DYING to play this and have been keeping up with your progress so far. Awesome work so far, but i would KILL for a chance to play it.
 
So I already have about 2-3 people play testing this, so I don't really need more at the moment. If I do reach out to anyone it will most likely be people from the speed running community who have good knowledge of the game and what text is supposed to be where. This isn't really a task for people playing the game the first time who just want to play it for fun.

Also I figured I should probably point out in regards to the comment about ZTranslate AI Translation. That really is the same as holding a phone over your screen, it's just holding the phone for you so to speak. Under the hood it's using the exact same machine translation software that the various apps on your phone use.
 
It wouldn't be my first time playing, I already played through the game twice, once on Saturn and once on PSX, I just haven't played the NG+ but yes I probably wouldn't know as much as a speedrunner. I was thinking the NG+ mode might have dialogues not present on the first playthrough, at least this guide claims that the PSX version does, I'm just not sure if that's also true on Saturn but it might be something to watch out for.

On the topic of Saturn vs PSX versions and since it was brought up earlier ITT, I'm glad you're translating the Saturn version as it is imo the better version of the two. Graphics are slightly worse on PSX, the FOV in first persons segments is lower, seams between textures are more obvious, everything is darker and on top of that they enabled PSX dithering everywhere including on 2D art for which imo it doesn't really fit.
But the worst offender are the music and sound issues, there are tons of those in the PSX version (some emulators do make it worse but I'm not talking about that, it's not just an emulation issue), here is an exemple but it's only an exemple, for instance after a while I decided to set the music to Mono because the mixing often had 90% of a track's instruments all the way to the left.
As for the casino that the PSX version ads, yes it's optional, but the rewards really break the game, for instance in the original version if you wanted an item to raise a demon's loyalty to the max, or a Soma or Chakra Pot, you'd have to turn the appropriate demons into items at the Demon Palace after raising their loyalty, but with the casino you can simply play the dice throwing game once and win enough coins for several of those items. Same logic with the weapons and equipment casino rewards which if you acquire them are some of the strongests in the game, and thus render the entire system to turn demons into gear almost pointless except for a couple of exceptions.
As far as I'm concerned this extra content doesn't justify lower graphical and audio quality; although the Pocket Station demon breeding might be cool, I haven't tried it.

As for ZTranslates vs Google Lense, I know it's supposed to be the same thing under the hood, but I often do get better results with ZTranslate and I can't explain it. I just tried it again before making this post and I had an example of that happening after only 3 tries with Google Lense failing to translate words. For the record I'm not advocating against fan translations, obviously I wouldn't be here otherwise, AI is what it is.

I hope you consider doing Devil Summoner one of these days as the PSP version is almost a different game.
