Virtual Memory and Hardrives..

Ok.. I am soon getting one of those drives with 8 mb buffer, probably about 120 gig..

My question is this, I have an old 800 megabyte drive.. I was wondering if i installed the 800 on the second ide and used it only for the page file if it would improve system performance.. or since its such an old drive would leaving the page file on the faster drive with a bigger buffer be better?

at 800MB that thing is probably 5400 rpm or 4200 rpm or something. You definetly don't want to put your page file on that. Instead just put your page file on c or whatever, and set it to a static size, so that windows doesn't try and change it all the time.

Also, the old drive is likely to be slower in general. It'll use one of the PIO transfer modes, rather than one of the newer DMA modes.

Hmm, I've found that some old drives that ran in PIO actually do support DMA, but the board did not. But that doesn't matter, the drive is old and slow. Just do what Rabbit suggested and you'll be fine.
