Mobile Suit Gundam first aired in 1979, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It completely bombed. However, Tomnio re-released the series a couple years later as a movie trilogy, and it was a big success. Saber Marionette and Burn Up = serious cheesecake of the reputation-precedes variety (cf. Agent Aika, Amazing Nurse Nanako, Plastic Little et. al., -- I'm sure someone keeps a top ten list somewhere); I'm surprised you haven't heard of them since I'm aware of them and I'm not really an "anime fan" as such. I don't know why he included Card Captor Sakura in that list, AFAIK it's just run-of-the-mill magical girl stuff.

Saumrai Champloo is excellent! Glad someone mentioned it, too bad it will be a bit before the new episodes come out in Japan. Also just got done watching Elfen Lied, good series, a bit violent at points but a compelling story that builds and builds.
