I posted this in the Anime forum for my Japanese class. I don't really watch that much Anime anymore (except Gundam). So here goes:

Gundam is the greatest mecha anime saga!

Mobile Suit Gundam first aired in 1979, created by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It completely bombed. However, Tomnio re-released the series a couple years later as a movie trilogy, and it was a big success. Considered to be the "Star Trek of Japan", it has spawned nine TV series, four OVA series, and three movies.

Mobile Suit Gundam (TV Series, 42 episodes) 1979

Mobile Suit Gundam (Compilation Movie) 1981

Mobile Suit Gundam: Soldiers of Sorrow (Compilation Movie) 1981

Mobile Suit Gundam: Encounters in Space (Compilation Movie) 1981

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (TV Series, 50 episodes) 1985

Mobile Suit Gundam Double Zeta (TV Series, 47 episodes) 1986

Gundam: Char's Counterattack (Movie) 1988

Gundam 0080: War in The Pocket (OVA, 6 episodes) 1989

Mobile Suit Gundam F91 (Movie) 1991

Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (OVA, 13 episodes) 1991

Gundam 0083: Last Blitz of Zeon (Compilation Movie) 1992

Mobile Suit Victory Gundam (TV Series, 51 episodes) 1993

Mobile Fighter God Gundam (TV Series, 49 episodes) 1994

New Mobile Report Gundam Wing (TV Series, 49 episodes) 1995

Gundam: The 08th M.S. Team (OVA, 12 episodes) 1996

After War Gundam X (TV Series, 39 episodes) 1996

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OVA, 3 episodes) 1997

08th M.S. Team: Miller's Report (Compilation Movie) 1998

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (Compilation Movie) 1998

Turn-A-Gundam (TV Series, 50 episodes) 1999

G-Saviour (Live Action Movie) 2000

Turn-A-Gundam: Earth Light (Compilation Movie) 2002

Turn-A-Gundam: Moonlight Butterfly (Compilation Movie) 2002

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (TV Series, 50 episodes) 2002

Gundam SEED Special Edition (Compilation TV Series, 6 episodes so far) 2004

Zeta Gundam: Inheritor of The Stars (Compilation Movie) 2005

Zeta Gundam II (Compilation Movie) 2005

Zeta Gundam III (Compilation Movie) 2005

There are also several parody series, featuring Super Deformed Gundams (basically Chibi-Gundams)

Mobile Suit Gundam Mk I (OVA, 1 episode) 1988

Mobile Suit Gundam Mk II (OVA, 1 episode) 1989

SD Gundam's Counterattack (Movie) 1989

Mobile Suit Gundam Mk III (OVA, 1 episode) 1990

Mobile Suit Gundam Mk IV (OVA, 1 episode) 1990

Mobile Suit Gundam Mk V (OVA, 1 episode) 1990

That screen capture is from Gundam 0083. A 13-episode OVA series released in 1991. The stolen, nuclear equipped Gundam GP02A (Left) battling the Gundam GP01 (Right).

This year is the 25th Anniversary of Gundam! I forgot to mention that before.

I love Gundam...

What I have seen:

Mobile Suit Gundam (About ten or so episodes)

Gundam 0080 (All)

Gundam 0083 (Seven of the Thirteen episodes)

08th MS Team (About half)

Char's Counterattack

Gundam Wing (All, Three times)

Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz (OVA version three times, Movie version once)

G Gundam (All, Once, Although I watch Episode 45 at least once a week).

Gundam SEED (The first eleven episodes)

SD Gundam Force (About twenty episodes)

Saber Marionette and Burn Up = serious cheesecake of the reputation-precedes variety (cf. Agent Aika, Amazing Nurse Nanako, Plastic Little et. al., -- I'm sure someone keeps a top ten list somewhere); I'm surprised you haven't heard of them since I'm aware of them and I'm not really an "anime fan" as such. I don't know why he included Card Captor Sakura in that list, AFAIK it's just run-of-the-mill magical girl stuff.

edit: as for my list...

- Full Metal Alchemist

Quite the list, eh? I said I'm not much of an anime fan. :)

Naruto

Rurouni Kenshin + OVA's - the movie since it was bad

Trigun

Cowboy Bebop

Hellsing

Serial Experiments Lain

Berserk

Akira

Weiss Kreuz - the OVA's because they weren't good either

Evangelion, even though I can't stand mech and religion combined together

Escaflowne

DNA^2

Initial D

Ayashi no Ceres

Flame of Recca

Inuyasha

Any Gundam Series if you like Mech

Yuu Yuu Hakusho

Kodoma no Omocha = Crack anime ;)

Detective Conan

Fist of The North Star

Tenchi Series

Excel Saga, if you can make it past the first few eps

FLCL = Crazy

etc... etc.. etc...

That's quite a list you have there, Ex.

What happened to Naruto?

Umm....

Samurai Champloo

Melody of Oblivion (not great, but okay... mythology+technology)

Genshiken (book's better, but what the hell, sometimes you gotta see it in motion)

SunaBouzu (kinda stupid, but kinda fun)

Requisite Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex: 2nd Gig mention

Yakitate Japan (book's better, but what the hell)

Saumrai Champloo is excellent! Glad someone mentioned it, too bad it will be a bit before the new episodes come out in Japan. Also just got done watching Elfen Lied, good series, a bit violent at points but a compelling story that builds and builds.
