CPK FMVs to MPEG project

Hey everyone, I am currently working on a prototype turning cinepak fmv files into mpeg for easier baking of subtitles into a MPEG file I have a working prototype with the game Neon Genesis Evangelion 2nd Impression a game notorious for having weird cinepak files and generally not wanting to have edited cpk files. After driving my head into a wall, I thought about silver star story MPEG edition and wondered how hard it would be to make a MPEG version of NGE 2nd Inpression and was able to get MPEGs working with my own Saturn MPEG player. My question is now does it work on real hardware? I have a Saturn movie card coming in the mail and was wondering if anyone with a HiSaturn or a satiatior could test if it works. I have no clue if this would be beneficial to anyone else but it has been working wonders for me. I have attached a photo of the MPEG running I was able to extend the video vertically to add a subtitle window so it doesn’t take up any FMV real estate. Another problem I ran into was finding an emulator that works with an MPEG card and found that the only good emulator that has MPEG card support is an emulator called erings by user-none on GitHub. Again anyone with a real MPEG card and a way to play a bin cue on a Saturn please contact me I need to know if it works on real hardware.

There's nothing weird about the Cinepak files in the Evangelion games. The issue is the way the disc is authored makes it complicated to apply a patch with the available patching options we have. Converting it over to MPEG seems far more complicated than it needs to be and is just limiting those who can play the game to that add-on.

Secondly I'm confused. You say you have MPEG running on your Saturn but you don't have the MPEG card and need someone with an MPEG card to test. Have you actually modified the game's code to use the MPEG card or have you just made an MPEG file?

To answer your first question I used every tool that I could find to get the cinepak files to have subtitles baked in and most failed or looked terrible so I’ve been looking for other options.

To answer your second question I have got mpeg playback working for the game on an emulator and since I was waiting on my Saturn movie card to arrive I was hoping someone could test on real hardware while I wait for mine. I have got feedback that while it works on an emulator it doesn’t yet work on real hardware. While I understand that using the mpeg card limits the amount of people who can play the game I am working on other methods to load videos when I get those working I will share more.

Id suggest to try using Nova rather than that newer emulator, its cheating something (or a number of things) if its not working on real hardware.

Also review this old thread: MPEG sample finally complete

You’ll need the mpeg video on a mode 2 track

I tried softsubs didn’t like it and the mpeg is on its own mode 2 track. I was in a pinch and couldn’t use nova when I was working on my mpeg player however I am looking into nova. I will eventually get something working that doesn’t require the mpeg card but that will take time. I have found a new way to patch games using either a stock bin cue or the original disc with on the fly patching.
