So I had some success on a windows 7 machine, with cygwin. Same test failures from make check in that environment, but the test message was received by minimodem. I then tried capturing a save file, and kept getting the NOCARRIER message like Mobius reported.
I setup a usb debian drive, was going to try apt-get and building it in linux. Again, I'm not super savvy in linux but I've messed with it enough over the years to make a bunch of mistakes, fumble my way around, eventually solve the problems I've created for myself and usually end in success. I'll post the NOCARRIER messages when i get back in front of that computer.
Revising this post, cuz I got it working. Didn't realize you have to keep letting the data "play" after the initial sound burst. Finally figured that out, and success!
Also, a separate tidbit for anyone doing this in Cygwin - the boxes have to be unchecked in Windows Sound, for the line in device that you're receiving the data on.
