Sega Games and Consoles Sales figures

Even the N64 was outselling the Saturn…
To be fair the Nintendo 64 launched about 1,5 years later than the Sega Saturn. If you look at them launch alligned in the first year, second year ... sales are more or less the same despite the N64 being way cheaper at launch, 25.000 Yen vs 44.800 Yen, and quickly getting discounted pretty heavily. Both consoles only got supported for barely for 4 years in Japan anyway.
The N64 managed to have more million sellers in Japan, 9¹ vs 1, cause of the huge difference in how many games were released for each system. N64 got 198, the Sega Saturn 1.057 in Japan.
¹ Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Bros, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Party 2, Mario Tennis, Donkey Kong 64, Pocket Monsters Stadium (didn't get released in the west, we ended up getting Pocket Monsters Stadium 2 as Pokémon Stadium) and Pocket Monsters Stadium Gold & Silver aka Pokémon Stadium 2

Still the real battle for console sales supremacy during those years was between the Nintendo Gameboy + Gameboy Colour and the Playstation 1. Until the release of Pokemon in Feburary 1996 the Gameboy was pretty dead sales wise but thanks to word-of-mouth and the big multi media push with stuff like the Anime Pokemon would turn into a huge phenomen in Japan by late 1996 and single-handedly revive the Gameboy.
Good research, BigO2
Thanks!

To go back to the overall console war between the Sega Saturn and the Playstation 1 in Japan. It only really lasted from Novemeber 1994 to Late 1996 since even before the release of FF7 the gap in units sales had already grown to 600.000 units.
What most people also forget is that in 1995 the SNES was still by far the dominating console. SNES Console sales weren't terribly far behind the PS1 and Saturn during 1995² but more importantly game sales were still far bigger on SNES than on either PS1 or Saturn.
Of the 7 games released that year that sold more than a million copies in Japan, 6 were released on the SNES³.
By 1996 the winds of change were starting to blow with only 3 of the 7 games released that year being on SNES⁴ but even then only 2 were on PS1. The Playstation Peak Years in Japan ended up being from early 1997 until mid 2001, so more so during the Years of the Dreamcast and after Sega Saturn's market relevancy in Japan was already over ⁵.

² from April 1994 to March 1995 the SNES sold 2.650.000 consoles in Japan, from April 1995 to March 1996 the SNES sold 1.780.000 consoles in Japan and from April 1996 to March 1997 the SNES sold 620.000 consoles in Japan
³ Derby Stallion 3 , Chrono Trigger, Yoshi's Island, Romancing SaGa 3, Donkey Kong Country 2, and Dragon Quest 6. Virtua Fighter 2 would be the first game released for a non-Nintendo console to sell more than a million in Japan ending 12 years of total Nintendo domination.
⁴ Super Mario RPG, Donkey Kong Country 3 and Dragon Quest 3 SNES
I did a pretty big writeup on Playstation games sales in Japan by year on the Install Base Forum so got read that if you wanne know more

Since I just covered the PS1 vs Saturn (vs N64) in Japan I might as well cover Mega Drive vs PC Engine in Japan as well.

The issue is that the last sales figures Famitsu provided for the PC Engine's CD Addon include the PC Engine Duo, which combines the PC Engine and the CD Addon into a standalone console, so it isn't a 1-to-1 comparison with the Mega CD, since the Mega CD needs a Mega Drive to function.
Since its usable standalone the sales of the PC Engine Duo should be added to the overall sales of the PC Engine in my opinion.

The last time Famitsu gave us seperate numbers, in May 1993, the standalone usuable PC Engine Duo had sold 600.000 and the CD Addon, that need a PC Engine to function, had sold 900.000. This means the ratio was 1 PC Engine Duo for every 2,5 CD Addons sold.
So of the overall 1.920.000 sold by the end of March 1996 of the PC Engine's CD Addon about 768.000 should be PC Engine Duo's.

The PC Engine (including the standalone functioning PC Engine Duo) had sold 4.688.000¹ consoles by the end of March 1996 in Japan.
The PC Engine's CD Addon (not including the PC Engine Duo) had sold 1.152.000 by the end of March 1996 in Japan.
¹ the PC Engine alone had sold 3.920.000 consoles.
vs.
The Mega Drive had sold 3.580.000 consoles by the end of March 1996 in Japan.
The Mega CD had sold 400.000 by the end of March 1996 in Japan.

March 1999: 5.750.000 (+150.000)
According to Sega, the Sega Saturn shipped more than 6.000.000 in Japan, see the above post.
¹ According to the Timeline from the Saturn no Game wa Sekai Ichi~i~i~i!: Satamaga Dokusha Race Zen Kiroku book the Saturn had shipped 500.000 by December 1994. However in an Interview with Hideki Okamura from May 1995, he said it reached 500.000 by January 10, 1995. Maybe Hideki Okamura was talking about units actually sold trough to the customer and by December 1994 they had shipped 500.000 to retailers.
² To commemorate selling 1 million Sega Saturn consoles in Japan, Sega released a bundle of the Sega Saturn Console with the game Virtua Fighter Remix for 34.800 Yen.

I added the sources as pictures. Sadly the Source usually don't say when in the month these shippment numbers were announced.

For as much as people love the Segata Sanshiro Ads, they really didn't help the Saturn with selling. The TV ads featuring him started appearing in late November 1997 but by then, FF7 and the announcment that DQ 7 would release on the PS1, both back in January, had killed the Saturn's Sales.
To give you a idea how much those two things boosted the PS1 shippment numbers in Japan:
June 22, 1996: Price reduced to 19.800 Yen
January 9, 1997: 5.000.000
End of May 1997: 7.500.000 (+2.500.000)
November 13, 1997: Price reduced to 18.000 Yen
End of December, 1997: 10.000.000 (+2.500.000)
December 1, 1998: Price reduced to 15.000 Yen
December 21, 1998: 14.250.000 (+4.250.000)
December 2, 1999: 16.770.000 (+2.520.000)
Yes, in 1997 alone Sony managed to sell almost as much PS1 Consoles, 5.000.000, as Sega Saturn's in its whole lifetime.
Sources in attached files.

Just for completion sake here are Nintendo 64 Console shippment numbers in Japan until March 1999:
Release on June 23, 1996, Launch Price 25.000 Yen
End of June 1996: 500.000
March 1997: 2.030.000 (+1.530.000), console Price reduced to 16.800 Yen without tax
End of September 1997: 2.470.000 (+440.000)
March 1998: 3.140.000 (+670.000)
July 1998: console Price reduced to 14.000 Yen without tax
March 1999: 4.350.000 (+1.210.000)

Do we not have any shipment numbers for the PS1 in Japan before January 1997? It would help to identify about when its sales took off into the stratosphere.

Damn thanks. Sorry to tell you I just added a bunch of new numbers for the Saturn.

Here are the Playstation numbers from the japanese Wikipedia page for the PS1. They mostly use old Sony press releases as their source. Sadly after December 1999 we would only get one last update for the PS1's sales in Japan in 2004 and that wasn't just the sales in Japan but the sales in Asia overall, so countries like China and South Korea included, thou I think Asia only contributed something like 1.500.000 to that figure max:

1994
December 3 - 100,000 units on the first day

1995
Week 4 of May - 1 million units in Japan

1996
August 31 3.5 million in Japan
October 31 Japan: 4 million
November 30 Japan: 4.2 million

1997
January 8 - Japan: 5 million units
February 14 - Japan: 5.6 million
May 31 - Japan: 7.5 million
August 26 Japan: 8.5 million
December 31 - Japan: 10 million units

1998
February 5 - Japan: 10.65 million
August 21 - Japan: 13 million
December 21 - Japan: 14.25 million
December 2, 1999 - Japan: 16.77 million

May 18, 2004 - Japan and Asia: 20.72 million units, 100 million units worldwide

March 31, 2005 - 102.49 million units worldwide

Also overall Nintendo 64 Console shippment numbers in Japan:
Release on June 23, 1996, Launch Price 25.000 Yen
End of June 1996: 500.000
March 1997: 2.030.000 (+1.530.000), console Price reduced to 16.800 Yen without tax

March 2000: 5.290.000 (+940.000)
March 2001: 5.490.000 (+200.000)
March 2002: 5.540.000 (+50.000)

*Figures for Japan include shipments to Asian countries and regions including South Korea.

PlayStation® Cumulative Production Shipments of Hardware (Unit: million)

The issue with those is, as the note at the bottoms says,: *Figures for Japan include shipments to Asian countries and regions including South Korea.
So its not just the figures for Japan.
I went back and compared the press release shipment numbers I posted previously and the website timeline shipment numbers.
Either the shipment numbers given in the press releases always included the whole of Asia not just Japan (and Sony lied about that) or Sony just added the shipment numbers for Asia at some point late in the website timeline but still said that the early shipment numbers from the timeline included Asia even if they were only for Japan.
Playstation shipment numbers as of Feburary 2002.png

Even as late as Feburary 13, 2002 they still said the 19.13 million shipment number was only for Japan even tough in the official website timeline the January 31, 2002 shipment number of 19.13 million supposedly includes Asia as well.
Sony released the PS1 in Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia in December 1996 and in December 1997 in Taiwan so the numbers before December 1996 are automatically Japan only. Sony didn't release the PS1 in South Korea or China, thou they obviously got imported by third parties.

≪ Super Robot Wars: List of Titles and Shipment Figures ≫ As of May 28, 2004

Super Robot Wars F - 550.000 - September 25, 1997 (Sega Saturn)
Super Robot Wars F Final - 550.000 - April 23, 1998 (Sega Saturn)
Super Robot Wars Alpha for Dreamcast - 100.000 - August 30, 2001 (Sega Dreamcast)

Stumbled upon a Banpresto press release from May 2004 that includes shipment numbers for all Super Robot Wars games as of 2004.
Here are shipment numbers for games released for Sega consoles.
Good to see that the magazine sales estimates, posted previously, are in line with the actual shipment numbers given by the game publisher.
Yes, its shipment numbers not sold-trough-to-customer, but Banpresto wouldn't have shipped 550.00 of Super Robot Wars F Final if the prequel hadn't sold trough its shipped copies.

Some intresting demographic informations about Sega Dreamcast owners in Japan in Feburary 2000. Based on a survey done be Sega itself not the Sega Dreamcast Magazine. Show's what I expected, most people that owned Sega consoles were probably hardcore gamers that owned Sega consoles as a side piece to the Playstation.

Best Selling Sega Saturn Satakore rereleases in Japan as of September 1998.png

Source is Saturn Fan instead of the Sega Saturn Magazine. I use Saturn Fan estimates in this case since I couldn't find any Sega Saturn Magazine best selling list for the Satakore releases. Release dates are of the Satakore rerelease not the original release.
The Saturn Fan sales estimates for the Sakura Wars Satakore release is about 10.000 copies less sold than the Sega Saturn Magazine number, thou that number is from 6 months later March 1999. From what I compared otherwise they usually give pretty similar sales estimates but also tend to have lower sales numbers a bunch of times.
However the sales estimates for Number 5 Koden Koureijutsu Hyaku Monogatari: Hontoni Atta Kowai Hanashi are way to high. Looking at the weekly sales rankings from Saturn Fan it sold, at most, 3.000 to 4.000 copies.

All the Top 15 Weekly Best Selling Sega Saturn Games in Japan Rankings for the first half of 1997 from the Sega Saturn Magazine published by Softbank Publishing. The rankings are from issue 03/1997 until issue 24/1997. You can find a digitla archive of them here.
Before Issue 03/1997 they would use points instead of the actual unit sales figures in the ranking, so those are more or less useless since we don't know how much 1 point means unit sales wise.
Note that sometimes total sales would be adjusted downwards week on week since earlier sales estimates were to high.
For example QuoVadis 2 77.002 copies sold by 20.04.1997, only for that number to be lowered to only 70.097 in the following weekly sales rankings.
QuoVadis 2 is also a good example for another issue. It's sales jumped from 49.411 to 77.002 in one week despite the game only selling 7.591 copies that week.

Thanks for your research, BigO2!

Geeez, D-Xhird was such a bomb, just 6,000 copies

I wonder if Sega was disappointed or satisfied with 80,000 sales of Hanagumi Columns considering the main series was a half-million seller

Zero4 Champ DooZy-J Type-R of all things debuted pretty decently in second place with 34k

Fighters Megamix still being in the top 10 six months after launch is wild

Kakyuusei was a monster. Five straight weeks at No. 1 and seven straight weeks in the top 10.

There were so many 2D and 3D Fighting Games from smaller developers both on Saturn and Playstation during that time its crazy. Just in the first half of 1997 we got K-1 Fighting Illusion Shou, Advanced V.G., Groove on Fight, D-Xhird and Waku Waku 7 and thats just the ones that sold enough to chart.

Sega had already made 6 Columns Games so and I can't imagen porting the game system over to the Saturn took much time or effort. The game also cost 5.800 Yen (just as much as Sega Rally or Fighters Megamix) despite being not having that much content vs. 6800 Yen for Sakura Wars which undoublty cost way more money and time.
Also 2 months before in January Sega released Sakura Taisen Hanagumi Tsuushin for 4.800 Yen which wasn't much more than digital newsletter yet still managed to sell 100.000+.
In general releasing 2 new products in just the first 6 months after your suprise hit is pretty excessive milking so one selling 1/5 and another selling 1/6 of the original games sales figures is pretty impressive.

It was a minor franchise back then getting 5 games in 6 years across the PC Engine, Super Famicom, Sega Saturn and Playstation. Hell the Playstation release of DooZy-J Type-R had sold 90.000+ copies (Week 28, place 22 for source) by early July 1997 before disappering from theFamitsu weekly sales charts.

The first two Evangelion games performance is probably most impressive to me especially Neon Genesis Evangelion (New Package Rerelease) considering its just a budget rerelease of the 1996 game yet managed to sell even more than the original release by the end.
Sega really lucked out hard with sponsoring Evangelion even beyond getting exclusive rights for games for the first couple of years after its airing but also since its the reason Super Robot Taisen F and Super Robot Taisen F Final would be released exclusively on Saturn.

Softbank Top 100 Sega Saturn Software Through 1997.10.19:
100. Virtual Hydlide <RPG> (Sega) {1995.04.28} (¥5,800) - 74,646
I don't think The Conveni: Ano Machi o Dokusen Seyo (76.043) and Sakura Taisen Hanagumi Tsuushin (79.936) actually sold as much they did according to the weekly ranking since neither of them showed up on the Top 100 list from November 1997 despite selling more than number 100 Virtual Hydlide (74.646).

I wonder what made J. League Victory Goal '97 (66.187) bomb so hard compared to J. League Victory Goal (245.993) from 1995 and J. League Victory Goal '96 (349.131). All of them review pretty equally well in Japan yet sales of '97 were only like a fifth of '96.
Next year thanks to Japan playing at the World Cup '98 J.League Pro Soccer Club o Tsukurou 2 on Saturn, Winning Eleven (Japan's version of Pro Evolution Soccer) and Fifa 98 on Playstation would all sell over 500.000 copies for each the first time in Japan.
Yet on Saturn Sega Worldwide Soccer 98 and World Cup '98 France: Road to Win sales continued to slump with both only selling around 60.000 copies each. Just wanne add its not cause of third party soccer games, those only sold like 10.000 to 20.000 on Saturn.
