So we might get a moon base....

From what i am reading in the news we will get a big boost in our space department (NASA).

Man a base on the moon would rock.

The last time we had the space race with the Soviet Union alot of technologies came from that that we now use on a daily basis.

This time it sounds as if we are in another space race with China. Think of the technologies to be gained when NASA gets increased funding. Another technological explosion would be great, the space race produced so much technology that we use and take for granted every day in this age its ridiculous.

Woot for Bush! It's about damn time someone actually cared about NASA.

Now heres the question for you. What would you do if we had a city on the moon?

Personally I would start a cheese factory, now cheese really would come from the moon. :yum

Let's just hope there's no GAP on the moon. I hope they outlaw big businesses and commercial clothing/food outlets there.

you should all know there will be no base anytime soon. this idea will dangle like bait long enough for you to reelect bush and then he'll forget about it and refocus on war efforts.

the idea is just too expensive. we put 11 guys on the moon all in the span of 3 years and then nothing for the next 30+ years...

at best, the moon will be similar to anartica in maned stations about 100 years from now.

(pissing on your dreams)

Bah... More wag-the-dog tactics from the Bush administration.

"We created a war to try to keep the high approval from post 9-11. This isn't working, the public is starting to listen to those who are speaking out against what we're doing. The public is going to elect someone else this year. What can we do to distract them from this mess and get our approval ratings back up so we can keep our jobs for four more years. Wait, people love it when the government does stuff in outer space, what if we said we were gonna send more people to the moon... Or even better, lets say we're gonna send a crew up to Mars, and build a permanant spacestation on the moon! Yeah, that'll do it..."

And wait'll you hear the kicker if the Bush administration really *is* serious! They can't do anything about it until after the election, because if they ask for another $300 billion in taxes to fund this on top of the billions and billions they're sucking up to occupy that little third-world country called Iraq, they'll never be able to win the election!

Nah...nice as it would be, it won't happen. This is a re-election year and Bush has a lot of headaches. Not least that he can't afford it, nor will the country be able to afford it anytime in the next decade. This is nothing more than a short term distraction.

Still, we can dream.

C'mon you guys. Your always mad at this and that. Stop it. Think on the bright side for once. It's thinking like that that always gets you down.

Education is a problem with teachers not being able to discipline the kids. If the teachers could be able to discipline the kids and get them to pay attention I don't think they would have that problem anymore. I went to both private and public schools when I was a kid and there is a BIG discipline problem in the public ones. In the private school you didnt get away with anything and were disciplined for it. When I was in my last year of HS I went to public school because I wanted to go to tech school and there was almost no discipline. The kids were really messed up. No sense of moral for most of the kids there. Also I have noticed when I was in private school it was VERY rare for a kid to fail a grade. When I went to public school it was almost 1/4 of the class who failed the grade. Really messed up is what I would call it.

And as far as helping out the less fortunate, most of the people on welfare dont deserve it because there too damn lazy to go out and get a job so they just sit on there ass and wait for a handout from the govt. Boo freakin who. People dont know the meaning of work anymore. If you cant find a job start your own, thats the beauty with this country, you don't need anything to start your own business but your smarts and a strong will. The people that deserve welfare are being overshadowed by the lazy people and turned welfare into the lazy way out of life.

I started my business with no help from anybody and it took me 5 freakin years to get to where I am now. No debts and I'm saving up for a house. If I can do it anybody with a sense of mind can. It has only been the last year where I have been making money, before that I was barely scrapping by. I get REALLY made at the welfare people because they have no will left anymore because they are so reliant upon welfare its sick. Go out and get a freakin job and stop relying on the govt ya lazy bums! Leave the welfare to the people that actually need it! What do you think happened to poor people before welfare?

I'm gonna start a thread on what you are thankful for even though it's not thanksgiving. There better not be any complaining in the thread of what you could have had or whatever.

Some of you have really gotten me upset with your way of thinking. Arrrr. Are you ever happy?

:flamethrower:

Only problem with that is that the teachers have less and less motivation to do so when they are paid a mere pittance and given more and more children to manage, year after year. I think it's ridiculous to claim that public education is well-funded (or well-managed) in this country. I'm sure the teachers aren't perfect, but you can't blame them for faults that are systematic in nature.

The public teachers in my area are paid $50k to $130k!!!!!

I do agree that they should be paid more in the city. Philadelphia teachers are only paid $30k to start. My cousin teaches in the city.

Ok back on track. This is a what if post. What would you do if you could gain access to a moonbase/moon city?

Set up a bunch of loops and springs with artificial waterfalls and then run through them really fast with little boxs along the way to increase my speed and make me invunurable to damage

I don't think it's a Bush specific thing that he cares - historically a disaster has to occur for NASA to become useful again (as sad as that is). That, and NASA really has lost focus since landing on the moon way back. I mean, what do they do these days?

That being said, a moon base would be neat, but I have no idea what purpose it would serve. It's probably create a massive import/export industry, since the last I checked there isn't anything on that rock to sustain life (correct me if I'm wrong?).

So what I'm see is what happened to Beverly Hills (or Vegas) - a place in the middle of nowhere that was impossible to build on becoming one of the most notorious spots in the US, and the world even.

Yes, that's right, the moon would be one huge rave. 🙂

As an aside, I think that NASA should be less a government enterprise and more a private enterprise. There are plenty of billionaires who would fund such things as building a colony on the moon. I mean, right now all they have are those yacht races. At least give them something productive to do!

And, unless there's something showing me otherwise, there's no real benefit for space exploration anyway in this galaxy (unless the plan is to destroy the resources here and then move on - which I hope isn't the case, because we're several hundred years behind schedule).

i'd put a huge plumers crack on the moon (sketch it out on the surface). Then no matter when you look up at the moon you can say "It's a half moon tonigh".

Actually public school teachers earn quite a bit more than private school teachers. And as IceMan stated there is more discipline in private schools.

I think that depends quite a lot on the private school, not to mention the location of the public one. What you just stated is a sweeping generalization. Where I live (Denver), the public schoolteachers are paid horribly, except the most senior ones. As for there being 'more discipline', again, that depends entirely upon the school. But I think it's obvious that it's far easier for the teachers to control the kids when there are not as many of them in a class, which is generally the case in private schools.

I dunno how it is other places but here in Utah you get paid based on education....ya the teachers w/ 4yr degress get paid kinda shitty (my mom) but the ones w/ doctorate or master degress get FATTY checks. Most teachers around here are old ladies who popped out 8 kids and have been home for their whole life and decide to teach and go to school for a couple of years (in easy as fuk classes mind you) and then teach kids. I think they need to start at the root of the problem.....what they teach the teachers. If the teachers knew how to teach and stuff then that would improve the system A LOT. and yes, a little more funding would be nice.

As for the whole space thiong....I have always thought they needed more $$. Many good things that we use daily come from what NASA and other space people have done (anyone have a list?). I think they need to focus more on what's here (they have never been to the deepest parts of the ocean...what's down there? cure for cancer? maybe....). They should preserve rain forests and stuff liek that....priceless IMO and I am FAR from being a tree hugger, haha.

Either way I think this is a good step. I also think that most of the education BS has to do w/ the state. In utah for example if they let us have a lottery here and maybe 2-3 casinos (like in st george, SLC, Park City, other big tourist cities liek that) and took the money they made from that and threw it into education....damn the possabilities. Too bad they are too arrogent and have their heads shoved up their religious asses.

I don't know much about nasa, but 'ain't they (NASA) do quite a lot? Just most are Non-manned stuff? I heard somewhere it's like loads of times more expensive to send people into space to do stuff when they could get cheaper and more efficent robots to do it.

Basically it's cheaper not to send people up.

We need a Twilight Zone secenario where everyone who pisses on the poor and think it's they're fault for being poor will switch positions. To live without the safety net of family and not be able to afford a suit to get that job...

Where is Rod Serling when people would rather put their flag on the moon than feed a homeless orphan?
