Grandia English Patch

Translating Grandia 1.1.1

Hello, awesome work!. I have been playing version 0.85 and now got the 0.9.1. For me the new version hangs when starting a new game on the black screen right after the grandia screen and before being introduced to the game world (after the credits and the initial dialogue). The bagpipe just starts playing and the game then hangs repeating half or so a second of the tune. Version 0.85 passes the same point without issues on my system. I am on a VA0 with fenrir and regionfree bios. There are no old savegames for any version of grandia on the system. I redownloaded and tried both US and jap version. I also went for a new flex cable on the fenrir.
Ill keep trying to troubleshoot anything specific on my system. I also have a va09 that takes discs so i can burn one to see if I get the same issue there. Any more ideas for troubleshooting ? Could it be a bug ? Is it just me getting this result ?
again, absolutely amazing work!
Someone on the satiator discord downloaded a bad prepatched copy off of a facebook group and had the same issue. Not sure if that is the problem.

Hello TrekkiesUnite118 !
Thank you for your work, it's so nice to play this on saturn !
I'm trying to play it on mednafen in its original resolution, thanks to silmalik's mednafen build. But on this game i can't figure out what is the resolution use in game... When i move on screen or when there are zoom in combat, i always get like small screen deformation, which is typical when you're not in the right vertical resolution...
Do you have an idea about what is the resolution used in game ?

During the Main game and battles it runs at 352x224. During FMVs it runs at 352x448i. In the Map Screen it runs at 704x448i.

The screen deformations you are most likely seeing though are simply what happens when VDP2 scales background layers. The Backgrounds in battle are prerendered 512x512 backgrounds and VDP2 scales them as the camera zooms in and out while running at 352x224.

Thanks for your explanations ! I understand why i got those "problems" even when i tried in 352x224 ! Though I still enjoy the game thanks to your work !

So excited to try Grandia for the first time now that this translation patch is 'complete'! I've downloaded the patch, followed all the instructions and I've successfully booted up each disc through my Terraonion MODE on a real Saturn (though when booting up disc 2 I'm simply told there is no save data for that disc so I'm not able to test much there yet). I'm looking forward to playing through the entire game!

I'm not sure if anyone has mentioned this before (or if this frowned-upon to talk about on this forum) but after converting disc 2 to an ISO, for me it never matched the checksums in the patch readme no matter which source BIN/CUE I tried. The checksums for disc 1 matched perfectly, so I'm hoping there will be no problems with disc 2.

Thanks again for your work, Trekkies et al!!

I know at one point I forgot to update the disc 2 checksums in the readme but I thought I fixed that in the latest patch. I'll double check it later tonight.

I just finished CD 1 but when it goes to the save menu I'm pretty sure it freezes right before it allows you to save and all it shows is a really tinted black screen of the save screen. I'm pretty sure it freezes because afterwords if I try to eject the disc the screen doesn't change to the menu.

Ok, I see that's in an emulator. Is that core based on Mednafen by chance? Older Mednafen builds had a bug at that part of the game that causes it to crash. There is a workaround for it but it requires you to use the Assembly debugger and step through it.
It's the RetroArch Beetle Saturn which is a port standalone of Mednafen Saturn according to Libretro Docs - Sega - Saturn (Beetle Saturn)
I'd be down to do the assembly debugger if you can show me. also thanks for the fast reply

Just saw the edit of you referencing the post. Once again thank you very much!

Two minor bugs on real hardware:
When in Sult Ruins if you exit and try to save it goes to a black screen and hangs.
When on the ship for the second night where Sue says "Hey Justin" about not sleeping late. It says "He" only for a couple of seconds then that text box goes away and the full "Hey Justin..." text shows up.

I am slowly testing 0.9.1 burned at 10x on Verbatim discs (this burn speed and discs work great for every burned game I have made thus far SF3 S1-3, etc) on original hardware with the RacketBoy modchip.

So the issue with Sue's line on the Steamer appears to be a scripting bug, I have it fixed and will put out a new patch for the fix.

The other issue though I haven't been able to reproduce. I'm leaning towards it being a bad burn/bad CD-R. Remember just because other games work doesn't mean Grandia is going to work. Grandia uses ADX Audio and is playing multiple streams at once. That's a lot more CD Access going on than what you get in games like Shining Force III.

I'm about 10 hours in (loving the game so far!) and I haven't experienced any problems. I may have encountered the minor text bubble issue on the Steamer boat when Sue says "...tin. Hey Justin" along with a couple other lines of dialogue in the same text bubble. The bubble initially appeared for a fraction of a second (long enough to see just one line of text) before disappearing but then reappearing right away with what looked like a proper flow of text. As for the Sult Mines issue mentioned previously, when I left the mines to Recover at a save point and then returned, I had absolutely no problems.

Thanks again for the patch! I'm really enjoying my time with the game.

SF3 is constantly accessing the drive. Pretty much every move you make the game is loading something, this is why actual loading times are quick in the game.

The Sult Ruins sounds like the problem we had with my patcher.

Have you tested this spot with Mednafen and the disc you burnt? It may be possible that something in the patching process is going wrong for you;

Grandia I'd say is probably doing more than SF3 though. Grandia is using ADX Audio and trying to show off the tech as it's one of the first games to use it. So you have anywhere from 2-3 ADX Streams playing off the disc at once (Music Track, Sound Effect Track, and sometimes a voice track). Then you have it continuing to play those tracks as you go between maps, menus, save/load screens, etc. which each of those are loaded in on the fly of the disc. So the game is loading in new data of the disc while it's still streaming ADX Audio off the disc at the same time.

So basically imagine all the things SF3 is loading off the disc, then add on top of that constant ADX Audio streaming even while loading.

The issue here is a very specific instance which tells me there's something wrong with the burned disc at that specific point while it's streaming that particualr ADX track + that specific Map and trying to load the Save screen. The fact I nor others can reproduce it seems to reinforce that.

Out of all the games I added to my Fenrir - Grandia is the ONLY one I get the occasional Audio issue [and I ripped/patched my original discs]
@TrekkiesUnite118 isn't kidding when he says it streams a crazy amount of ADX audio (granted that the issues I have are very slight...sometimes the Audio will skip/stop and then resume)
