Lunar SSS English Patch

Translating Lunar Silver Star Story 1.5.1

Soft sub on movies could always be a future update, problem is it will require a new vdp1 based routine/font and verification that nothing crashes in the process (text drawing is mostly done in vdp2 now). For now im focusing on fixing the load bug and SSSC mpeg.

Just joined in to keep an eye on this. Seeing that this is coming got me to finally get an MPEG card for mine. Tested with the original Japanese version just now, can't wait for this to reach the last few goals and basically be perfect at that point!

Hey everyone! I just finished playing through v.1.1.2f and these are some of the visual anomalies that I ran into. The pic with Ramus has PSX buttons with a movie disc that likely doesn't exist. The others are visual glitches.
Not sure if these are known and/or already fixed, but just wanted to bring them up just in case they weren't. Thanks for all that hard work!

Thanks! The ramus text is already fixed for the next update. The Jessica text spill is new, but easy to correct. And the phacia one was reported but i thought it was fixed, so its back on the todo list.

Any chance you have a save state that you can transfer to pc just prior to the phacia text? Also is that the first or second occurrence of the image being distorted?
The script has 3 sequential dialogs there: phacia dialog, followed by Xenobia, and then back to phacia (same image as before).

Update — i looked at the scripts and some longplay videos. It appears WD altered the script and added a portrait that didnt exist in that scenario. I’ll just revert to the original script.

Thanks for checking into these. I played on real hardware, so no save states for me and the game takes up so much space per save on real hardware (129 blocks per save slot! Looks like we get 3 max for 387 blocks) that I was really limited as to what points to keep. Is shrinking the save file size down possible?

I do have a Fenrir ODE on that Saturn and can back up the save, but it's the full save of all of the backup RAM. If that's useful, let me know and I'll see what I can do on my end. Unfortunately, the closest save that I have now before that point with Phacia is at Myght's Lab right before going to the Frontier.

I think im good. Its pretty obvious that the preceding portrait is a bug, which is more than likely causing the corrupted image.

I also just finished playing through v1.1.2f on actual hardware, and everything worked great! Aside from those minor visual glitches that you mentioned above, I didn’t see any other issues. Great job on this translation project!

Updated to version 1.2 now!
Dub edition available, featuring the upgraded CPK video Trekkies was working on. Click into the resources description to get the link for the Dub version. The download button links to the JP audio version (no subs yet).

Update: Dub issues with certain ODEs fixed.

I havent looked into it. It seems like the portraits are the same as those used for some of the dialogs, so maybe if you alter those you would also alter the battle ones. Ms Tea has information on the format here: studio-lucia/lunardata

My decompression utility is here:

Not sure if there is a program to read/alter the format currently. You could try a tile editor and see if it shows up. Then after you alter it you would recompress it using my compression utility ( MrConan1/CMP_CMPRESS) and use something like cdmage to reinsert it

I'm running the latest 1.2r2 on Fenrir and the game will not start at all on the stock 10/28 firmware. It crashes into a black screen right after "loading."

If I use the Pseudo Kai firmware (pic attached) the game will start, but will freeze right before the final boss fight. Luna starts yelling and gets cut off midway when the game hangs.

Even if it did work, using Pseudo Kai to load Lunar removes access to save/load from the cart while using stock Fenrir firmware allows for its use.

1) If you can provide a save file we can more easily test it.
2) ODEs are known to have issues right now because they don't accurately emulate how a real Saturn with a CD Drive behaves. To deal with this we made a new patch that cut down the FMV quality and stripped out some files. Are you using the newer patch or the older patch?

Here's my backup bram save. Unfortunately, Fenrir backs up the entire contents of bram so it's not just Lunar, but hopefully it's something that can be worked with. Let me know if I can help in any other way. Thanks.

Your save file appears to be corrupt. There's two files with the same name, one is about half the size of the other, and neither work. They come up as "Can't be Used" when I try importing them with Pseudo Saturn.

I think that's the way that Fenrir backs up the bram. Ced is working on a way to restore it. Apparently, this might work but it's beyond me right now.

Other option is that I can try popping in my MODE later this week. IIRC, that should allow me to extract single saves though from what I read here, they likely won't work with AR carts; only official ones.

You can also try try this:

Bumping into an issue on real hardware and didn't see anyone else mentioning it here. The game boots to a black screen if I try to use an OEM memory card. If I take the memory card out, all's well and it works fine.

Anyone else bump into that issue?

It booted fine with my first party memory card. I've run into that type of issue with a 3 in 1 PseudoSaturnKai before, perhaps it's not getting a good read from the cartridge slot on your Saturn.

Cleaned the connectors and all. Memory card works fine otherwise. I'm going to try re-patching and see if that does it.
