Nekketsu Oyako (Japan) - English Translation + Improvement v1.0
patch by KoolFiller.

(Thanks!)
This project is based on an established English fan-translation for the Playstation version, by PentarouZero and Al LaPrade, first released in 2004:
Requires "Nekketsu Oyako (Japan)" Redump compatible image
Instructions
------------
1. Place the disc image into the "redump_original" folder.
2. Run "apply_patch.bat"
3. Your patched game will be in the "patched" folder
- Use the "Nekketsu Oyako (Japan) - English Translation + Improvement v1.0" folder for most cases (hopefully real hardware).
- Use the "Nekketsu Oyako (Japan) - English Translation + Improvement + Beetle HUD Fix v1.0" folder if you are using certain emulators like the Beetle core of RetroArch (and probably Mednafen). This slightly shifts elements of the in-game HUD to compensate for an (I think) emulator bug that hides the first letter in names behind portraits.
Surprisingly, pretty much every edit made to the Playstation fan-translated version was fairly easily transferrable, with a little techno voodoo.
I haven't made any revisions to their script, and the graphics were pretty much all done already by them. I did make a few text spacing refinements in the menus, and I added a few new options in the "Configuration" menus. I'll go further into detail below.
NEW OPTIONS
Page 1:
- "Lives Remaining"
Normally the game would let you choose between 1-4 "Lives Remaining".
Now you can choose anything between 0-9, or "Infinite" "Lives Remaining".
The default is still 2.
- "Credits" toggle
Normally the game would be locked to 5 starting credits, with no abilty to change that.
I've Added a "Credits" toggle. So now you can choose anything between 1-9, or "Infinite" credits.
The default is still 5.
- Added a "Next Page" button to the main "Configuration" menu, leading to a new second "Configuration" page.
Page 2:
- "Listen to Music" and "Play Sound FX"
These were actually hidden rows on the main menu, but I replaced them with the "Credits" toggle and the "Next Page" Button and relocated them here.
The PlayStation fan-translation included translations for these rows, though they don't seem to have enabled any hidden rows in their patch.
Pretty self explanatory, "Listen to Music" is a sound test function that lets you listen to 23 different background music tracks.
"Play Sound FX" needed a little work to exclude many empty SFX IDs, and duplicate SFX from the list. Now, you have a Sound FX test that lets you listen to 10 different sound effects from the game
- "Title Logo" toggle - English / Japanese
Now you can choose between either the title logo from the Playstation English translation, or the original Japanese title logo.
This choice effects the "Start" screen title logo, as well as the title logos in the background of the "Player Select" screen.
You get a cool fade in transition instead of the normal "slide" transition the first time you exit the config menus after changing this setting.
- "Save Settings" toggle - Yes / No
Never before available in the game, now you can save all your preferred settings and button assignments to internal memory.
Warning: If internal memory is full, "Save Settings" should switch back to "No" upon exiting the config menus and no settings will be saved.
Warning: If you are using certain emulators like RetroaArch and already have a file named "Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).srm" inside the "RetroArch>saves" folder, from playing an unpatched version of the game (probably a Redump compatible image) the "Save settings" function may not work.
You may have to either rename your cue file (maybe easiest) or delete/rename the "Nekketsu Oyako (Japan).srm" file, then the save function should work fine.
SECRET TIP:
On first glance there seems to be no way to change characters on continuing, or for two players to choose the same character. But actually you can hold a button while pressing start: Hold "A" for Rando, "B" for Rio, and "C" for Tora. This even allows two players to play as the same character, with different palettes.
