Neon Genesis Evangelion Girlfriend Of Steel English Translation V1.1

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel (Japan)

English Translation v1.0 - Sega Saturn

Patch by CheeseburgerFreedomMan

THIS PROJECT USES LLMs. I want nothing more than for there to be a fully human-coded alternative to this project that's on par with or better in every way. This is my first ever translation. I understand that some people may not like that I used GenAI, but this was just a fun project that I wanted to share with others.

This project is an English fan-translation of the Sega Saturn version of Neon Genesis Evangelion: Girlfriend of Steel.

The translation was produced using the existing English PSP version as the primary script reference, with extensive additional work required to adapt the dialogue, menus, graphics, scene data, and two-disc structure to the Sega Saturn release.

This patch is designed specifically for the Redump disc images of the Japanese release.

FEATURES

  • English dialogue throughout Disc 1 and Disc 2
  • Translated dialogue choices and menus
  • Translated location names
  • Translated save/load interface text
  • English text manually reformatted for the Saturn's original dialogue graphics
  • Font sizing and spacing adjusted to fit the Saturn version cleanly
  • Numerous menu alignment and centering corrections
  • Two-disc progression preserved
  • Ending sequences preserved
  • Ending credits confirmed working on original Sega Saturn hardware
  • Tested on both emulators and real Saturn hardware
  • SAROO-compatible
The objective of this project was to keep the Saturn version as close to the original presentation as possible while making the entire game comfortably playable in English.

REQUIRED DISC IMAGES

This release requires the Redump dump of:

Neon Genesis Evangelion: Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan)

Redump stores each disc as separate data and audio tracks.

For Disc 1, you should have files similar to:

Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 1).bin<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 2).bin<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1).cue<br>
For Disc 2:

Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2) (Track 1).bin<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2) (Track 2).bin<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2).cue<br>
Do not merge the tracks before patching.

Only Track 1 of each disc is patched.

Track 2 is the original CD audio track and must remain unchanged.

SOURCE IMAGE CHECKSUMS

Before patching, verify that your Track 1 files match these checksums.

Disc 1 - Redump Track 1

Filename:<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 1).bin<br><br>Size:<br>574,767,648 bytes<br><br>CRC32:<br>2C624797<br><br>MD5:<br>54153617287afa34719bebccb795ee69<br><br>SHA-1:<br>5d6c4ad8afde3a5529e03c9399af0766bdf11542<br>

Disc 2 - Redump Track 1

Filename:<br>Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2) (Track 1).bin<br><br>CRC32:<br>F86F3C5F<br><br>MD5:<br>952f90152b16a40d393525667e869e99<br><br>SHA-1:<br>208e54a76e556da6250ee9097ae0203c8fc1cef9<br>
If your Track 1 file does not match these checksums, the patch is not intended for that image.

A dump of the same game created using another method may contain the same game data but still differ at the binary level. XDelta requires the correct source image.

PATCHING INSTRUCTIONS

The translation is distributed as XDelta patches targeting the standard Redump Track 1 BIN files.

You will need an XDelta-compatible patching program, such as:

  • xdelta3
  • Delta Patcher
  • another frontend capable of applying XDelta/VCDIFF patches
The patches are:

Disc 1

EVA_GF1_EN_v1.0_REDUMP_TRACK1.xdelta<br>
Apply this patch to:

Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 1).bin<br>

Disc 2

EVA_GF2_EN_v1.0_REDUMP_TRACK1.xdelta<br>
Apply this patch to:

Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2) (Track 1).bin<br>
Do not patch Track 2.

PATCHING WITH XDELTA3 COMMAND LINE

For Disc 1:

xdelta3 -d -s "Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 1) (Track 1).bin" "EVA_GF1_EN_v1.0_REDUMP_TRACK1.xdelta" "EVA_GF1_EN_Track1.bin"<br>
For Disc 2:

xdelta3 -d -s "Neon Genesis - Evangelion - Koutetsu no Girlfriend (Japan) (Disc 2) (Track 1).bin" "EVA_GF2_EN_v1.0_REDUMP_TRACK1.xdelta" "EVA_GF2_EN_Track1.bin"<br>
If using a graphical XDelta patcher:

  1. Select the appropriate .xdelta file.
  2. Select the matching Redump Track 1 BIN as the source file.
  3. Choose a new filename for the translated Track 1 BIN.
  4. Apply the patch.
  5. Leave the original Track 2 BIN untouched.
It is strongly recommended that you keep your original Redump files untouched and create separate translated copies.

USING THE PATCHED DISC

The Saturn disc contains both a data track and an audio track.

After patching, the disc should consist of:

Disc 1

EVA_GF1_EN_Track1.bin<br>Original Disc 1 Track 2.bin<br>Disc 1 CUE<br>

Disc 2

EVA_GF2_EN_Track1.bin<br>Original Disc 2 Track 2.bin<br>Disc 2 CUE<br>
The CUE must reference both the translated Track 1 and the original Track 2.

If you rename the patched Track 1 BIN, make sure the filename listed in the CUE matches the actual filename.

Do not convert, recompress, or patch the audio track.

IMPORTANT - DISC 1 TO DISC 2

Girlfriend of Steel does not handle Disc 2 like a normal standalone game.

When Disc 1 reaches the disc-change point, the Saturn returns to the system's CD-player screen.

At this point:

  1. Do not reset or power off the Saturn.
  2. Change from Disc 1 to Disc 2.
  3. Resume the game.
When performed correctly, Disc 2 should continue directly into the next scene.

You should not normally see the Disc 2 opening/title sequence during this transition.

Starting Disc 2 independently and choosing New Game may display the game's original disc-change warning. This is normal behavior and is not a problem with the translation.

SAROO MULTI-DISC SETUP

For SAROO, keep the two discs in separate folders with matching names.

For example:

/SAROO/ISO/Neon Genesis Evangelion Girlfriend of Steel Disc 1/<br> EVA_GF1.cue<br> EVA_GF1_EN_Track1.bin<br> EVA_GF1_Track2.bin<br><br>/SAROO/ISO/Neon Genesis Evangelion Girlfriend of Steel Disc 2/<br> EVA_GF2.cue<br> EVA_GF2_EN_Track1.bin<br> EVA_GF2_Track2.bin<br>
The exact filenames are not important as long as each CUE points to the correct BIN files.

Configure SAROO's multi-disc functionality so that it recognizes:

Disc 1<br>Disc 2<br>
When the game reaches the disc-change screen, remove the SD card from the SAROO and put it back in.

The translated game has been successfully tested on real Sega Saturn hardware using SAROO.

EMULATOR NOTES

The game has been tested during development using Saturn emulation as well as original hardware.

Some emulator-specific graphical behavior may differ from a real Saturn.

In particular, during development the ending music played correctly in Beetle Saturn while the visual credit roll did not appear.

When using Ymir, the game wouldn't load.

The same translated build was later tested on a real Sega Saturn, where the original ending credits displayed correctly.

The game's original credit data is unmodified by this translation.

If you encounter missing credits in an emulator, this is likely an emulator compatibility issue rather than missing data from the patch.

TRANSLATION NOTES

Unlike many games where dialogue is stored as ordinary text, much of Girlfriend of Steel's Saturn dialogue is stored as graphical objects.

As a result, the English translation required the dialogue to be:

  • identified individually
  • matched against the English script
  • redrawn
  • resized where necessary
  • compressed back into the Saturn's scene data
  • tested for visual alignment
  • checked for scene-specific crashes and rendering problems
The existing English PSP release was used as the primary translation reference.

Each Saturn scene was then checked separately for dialogue or graphics that did not have a direct PSP counterpart.

Some English lines were lightly rewritten where a direct translation sounded unnatural or did not fit the available Saturn dialogue area.

FONT AND PRESENTATION

The English dialogue was designed around a 12-pixel font size whenever possible.

Text was kept at full size rather than heavily horizontally compressed.

Where necessary, lines were reformatted or slightly rewritten to maintain readability.

Menus and location labels were separately adjusted for:

  • centering
  • spacing
  • brightness
  • consistent alignment
  • correct elevator/location designations
The goal was to make the translated material look like it belongs in the original Saturn release rather than simply placing English text over the Japanese graphics.

SAVE / LOAD TEXT

The game's save-related interface has also been translated, including text such as:

  • SAVE?
  • SAVED
  • LOAD?
  • DELETE?
  • YES
  • NO
  • DISC 1
  • DISC 2
Location names used by the save system were also translated and standardized.

KNOWN ISSUES

No game-breaking issues are currently known in the final v1.0 build.

Because this game contains a very large number of individually rendered dialogue objects, minor spacing or visual inconsistencies may still exist.

If you encounter:

  • untranslated Japanese dialogue
  • badly compressed text
  • incorrect wording
  • menu alignment problems
  • crashes
  • progression problems
please report the scene and, if possible, provide a screenshot.

When reporting patching problems, please also include the CRC32, MD5, or SHA-1 checksum of your source Track 1 BIN. This will make it much easier to determine whether the correct Redump image was used.

HARDWARE TESTING

The translation has been tested through the game on original Sega Saturn hardware.

Confirmed working features include:

  • Disc 1 gameplay
  • Disc 1 → Disc 2 transition
  • Disc 2 gameplay
  • translated menus
  • translated save text
  • multiple endings
  • original ending credit roll
  • SAROO playback
