Tomb Raider originally for 32X?

Ah, so Darxside uses software rendering. Maybe some other more 3D-ish 32X games too, what might explain the hughe quality and performance difference among them. That might explain how Zyrinx got those additive flare effects, since I'm almsot sure the 32X doesn't support such thing natively.

Also I noticed the textures in the first Zyrinx demo had the PSX-style wraping when the gamera got too close. That doesn't happens neither in Darxside nor in Metal Head, so it hints a different renderer being used.

BTW, does the 32X VDP have any hardware drawing capabilities (like drawing filled polygons, or distorted quads, as the Saturn), or is it simply a fast dual processor unit with a "do it yourself" framebuffer, like the GP32 (not accounting the Genesis intarface)?

It's pretty much just a dual framebuffer with two relatively fast processors attached. You can do scrolling in hardware since you can define the start position in VRAM of each individual line and it has an RLE mode which I suppose would accelerate flat shaded rendering a tad.

The 32x didnt realy have any hardware acceleration for video it was up to the programmer to create a good 3D engine / software techniques to get the most out of the 32x.

Where's Virtua Hampster?

From what I remember of the 32X memorial site, Virtua hamster was on a list titled "confirmed prototype" along with the X-men game, whatever it was. The list above was copied exactly from the site, and the title for it was "rumored prototype".

Maybe that video demo runs so smoothly because the draw distance is cut back.

Programming your own custom renderer for a game console. Smooth.

Three games that I looked forward to on the 32X that never got made: Tomb Raider, Rayman, and Tomba. It's great to see at least one is finally coming. 😎

I recall it initially being planned as a 3DO game, then they felt the hardware wouldn't be able to pull it off, and it got moved to Playstation.

Funny thing though, XProger's in progress port of Tomb Raider shows the 3DO could've definitely pulled the game off

No....its because the Saturn's SH2 was the IDENTICAL or slightly modded version of the 32x's SH2 CPU, it was a great codebase to start from scratch from. But by the time the game was done, the 32x had long died and the Saturn was probably it's reincarnation.
