It depends on where you go in Japan. I was stationed at an air base in Misawa that powered on regular "american juice." You should check and see if you need a converter. The best way to check is to plug in a clock and have a watch on you with the actual time in Japan. If the clock lags, or falls behind your watch, etc. then you should get a converter for any equipment you use.
