What do you do?

Perhaps its because I work in it that I find spanish television positively horrific. They usually cater to the lowest common denominator which is usually one of three things...

1. Sex

2. Violence

3. More Sex

...and thats pretty much it. As much as I like my job, there are times when I wish our content was truely on par with the other major networks. Sitcoms are non-existent and (for whatever reason) simply don't translate to the Spanish market. Novelas are nothing but the story of Cinderella using different backgrounds. It would really be nice to see something truly original and groundbreaking JUST ONCE instead of the usual dribble.

At least I don't have to deal with the actual making and development of that crap. Give me a set, a crew, and a day to light it, and I'll make it beautiful. If I was actually a producer I'd probably shoot myself. Could you imagine taking things like Cristina Aguilera's need for Wendy's fries seriously? Or making sure that Julio Iglesia is only shot from his right side because he's as bald as an eagle? Sadly, for me, producers spend more of their time worrying about crap like that instead of the actual content.

falstaff, my wife too is addicted to novelas...It's the perfect opportunity to play more!

are there any american shows that are translated into spanish that air on spanish tv regularly? the only shows i;ve actually seen are stuff like sesame street and blues corner (or one of them nickelodeon shows). i would think at least some shows should spark some interest, from the type of shows i see. (novelas, music videos on Gems, morning show on Telemundo, shows with women in revealing clothes on mun2...)

anyway, i'd watch novelas too, only if i spoke spanish that well. they seem very interesting, to say the least. there's just something you dont see in american soap operas. the low-budget lighting, bitch-slaps, the constant "aye!"s...so, which ones would you recommend? i cant remember any titles off of my head right now, but i think i can spot a few.

Well, as a matter of fact almost nothing from univision/telemundo is show here, since the main target of those chains are the latins living in th eUS... and most of them from/for Miami. Although lately a few of them have pushed in for saturday afternoons or stuff.

BUT, what they have been producing lately a lot are talk shows.. and man do I hate them! specially the kind of "exposing people" but you know they are paying them...

Anyway, I have never liked telvision that much. Neither local nor US, with the exception of comedy and movies.

And the Adds.. the horrror!!!! I can't believe how bad they have become (and man, that is my bussiness line!)

Actually 3rdman, I do the same thing. I don't care for them that much myself, but have to watch once in a while if I want to spend time with her. But a lot of the time I do the same.....play games on my dc,psx,ss of 3do. (there are the consoles I keep out for regular use. I have just about all that have come out, but who has space? most are wrapped in plastic and in storage.) We have a home on the Dominican Republic we spend time at each year and yes, they do show a lot of american shows ( there at least.). Some are dubbed, some aren't. I've traveled some in Mexico but never paid attention to the tv shows there. Just commented on the ones they show here.

Your right about the novels though. Most are poor, beautiful girl who falls for rich son of bitchy mother and distracted father. Girl marries rich son only to find out his families money really belong to her as it was illegally taken from her through a fake will (or something like that.) Son breaks up with her. She rescues his faily even though they treated her bad before. Bitchey mother comes around and loves her like a daughter. Son marries her again and they live happily ever after. The funny part is if you read the credits, they state the story was based on shakespear or dovsteyevski or some other classic piece of literature and you just have to sit there and go HUH?!?!?!?

YS show are brodcast here a lot too, about 50% in som echannels, others are national.. I think that is a good average for them all.

But we have very few cannels in open TV (2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 22, 32 and 40). From those, the only good ones IMHO are 11, 22, and 40 (sometimes this last one) Which are cultural in a general sense. They have the best production and social approach, also good balance in content (eduational, cartoons, intelligent talk shows, documentals and comedy)

eatpenquin, Univision recently kicked off a sister Network called Telefutura and most of their programming is English televsion dubbed in english. It also uses the SAP channel for the english voices, I believe.

Another FYI, Telemundo has begun using English subtitles using closed captioned (CC3).

I used to work in a game shop called 'Just Micro', which is unfortunately no longer there. Then I worked in A/V equipment repair and service, and CCTV installation/repair. Then I did 6 years in the steelworks, which I did not enjoy :(

Now I work as a tester for a multinational videogame company

Just out of interest, I was wondering how old we all are here. I'm 26 on April the 8th.

39 in june. And you thought I was just teasing when I called myself an old fart.

When I have some free time, I at least have to use the crapper or take a leak. I do play games on my PS2 system and my DELL computer. I like to go to sleep on the weekends. Yeah, when you hear somebody snoring, it souns like they are sawing logs or lumber. I pace the floor when I take a break from doing things at the house. I also have to get some food and something to drink. The internet is the most thing I do when i'm at home. It is fun to play games and watch funny videos on-line. :D

Well...

Since I last posted in this thread nearly three years ago, I'm now a High School Senior.

What do I do? I play Virtua Fighter. Nine years and and still going strong.

I couldn't pick a better career. :p

I still don't get what is so special about Sunday. :huh

I work at a liquor store. :cheers Yes, it is legal to work there.

I want to work nothing but seedy jobs my entire life. I decided; screw college, I'm going to be a crime scene cleaner! :banana The pay for that type of job is insane, and you hardly ever have to work--just when they call you. Besides good pay, I'll also get to play with guts, it's a win win situation really.

You are awesome.

I play video games and go to classes at my college in Ohio. Yes, and I'm a freshman in college. As far as activities go, I participate in some ballroom dancing and some fencing.

Someday, I'd like to make video games. :smash
