xmas nights Bin/cue

Now on my 7th coaster, I have totally given up on getting this game to work,Christmas knights, I have read all the topics on this subject but to no avail.

I am using an iomega zip cd burner, with cdrwin 3.8

I have changed the country code with satconv, and using the swap which works with other games I have burned I keep getting the cd screen with game disk not suitable, on the final swap.

I have tried the second track as suggested in other topics with mode2, as it is a mode 2 track but no combination seems to work, has anyone got a technique on how to get this game working or is it impossible.

I think the prob should be in your burner...

Patching RAW MODE files... (2352 bytes per sector) is always tricky... older cd-burners don't (re)correct the ecc/edc codes when burning...

You should extract all the tracks with Binchunker, (both in cooked mode, 2048 for the mode1 track... 2336 for the mode2 track).

Then patch the first datatrack...

Follow This Thread and build a cue file... then burn it...

I tried the cue sheet in cdrwin, it loaded it but when I tried to burn it an error message appeared saying something about the cd recorder not accepting the cue due to dao.

I then tried the cue with fireburner, it burned the cd ok, but it came up as an audio cd when put in the saturn...

I think I`ll just give up, i dont think any game is worth all this hassle, i`ll just stick to single iso games

You're in the right way... that DAO error confirms my *theory* ... your burner is like mine.. ie. don't correct ecc/edc codes when burning, nor burns cooked mode tracks...

The steps to work this around are:

1 - Convert the 1st datatrack (in BIN) from RAW mode (2352) to cooked mode (2048 for mode1, and 2336 for mode2), using binchunker... Also extract all the other tracks in raw mode... look in the options.. set MODE2->2352, AUDIO->2352...

2 - Patch the ISO in COOKED form...

3 - (re)convert it to raw mode... with ISO2RAW ... you can find it HERE, download the DOS package called DAO.. iso2raw is inside..

Then build a cue-sheet using the "now-converted" datatrack1 (already in raw mode..), the 2nd datatrack in mode2 raw.. (directly from the BIN), and the audiotracks.. in raw mode (wav)

Hope this works... ???
 
Is there anywhere else to get DAO including ISO2RAW as

there is no link on the CDRWIN site to download it, only a description of it?

It worked, just as you said, and after playiny the game, it was worth it.

Whoa.... So here we have:

A CD recorder that will "undo" any patch done with SatConv on a RAW image, since the error-correction code contained in that image isn't updated by SatConv...

A CD recorder that cannot switch modes/sector sizes during burning, therefore requiring the Mode1 and Mode2 tracks to be in raw format, so everything stays at 2352 bytes/sector throughout the entire burn...

At least you're fortunate in that you CAN burn dual data-track games in either iso/wav or bin/cue form. My drive, a HP 9100, won't even do that.

It goes to show that all drives are different... *head spinning*
 
Yup, all cd-rom drives are different...

I still remember my painfull research when I tried burning iso+mp3 rips with my older burner, I just couldn't understand I it would burn bin+cue (luckly they were RAW mode bins), and refused to burn iso+mp3... then after reading some info in manufacturers' site (or somewhere else.. I can't remember correctly), I found out some interesting info.. something along these lines: "While these cd-rom recorders can burn both mode1/2048 and mode1/2352 images , they can't burn mixed mode cds containing both raw and cooked data..."

So after a while, I managed to overcome this limitation...

As soon as I started burning some games, I realized that raw-mode isos shouldn't be patched directly...
 
Yeah, exactly what I was talking about.

And the kicker is this: in MY case, I was happily patching raw-mode Saturn images before burning and never even thought that this might be a bad idea because of the error-correction stuff. But the patches DID stick once I burned my images, so I never ran into the sort of problem that would've made me realize what was really going on. Until much later when I just happened to think about it. Whew!
 
I could be wrong.. but I believe in fireburner 2.1.7 you can do this by saving the tracks in a different options mode, thereby bypassing all this work and converting the files to change directly to cooked mode for mode 1 (2048) and for the mode 2 to change to 2336. I can't test it right now because I'm out of CDs.. but I will and I'll give back results. Hope it works

Edit : Question : What do you do if you have a track that is of the exact same type and file size.

Essentially, I have a track 22 and 23 that are of the exact same size and type as the data mode tracks 1 and 2 in vatlva. I'm not sure but I think this causes some data mode issues? I also wanted to know if tracks are recursive? i.e. not having to reassign track numbers in the cue as long as the files are in the correct order?
 
As I recall from examining my original copy of Vatlva, there's only 19 audio tracks, so with the two data tracks (and starting to number them at 1), your last track would be 21. There are no tracks 22 or 23 - someone, for some stupid reason, just ripped them in duplicate I guess.

I don't understand your question about recursive tracks and reassigning them in the cuesheet...

Do the tracks number themselves (for example, loading them in fireburner) by the track number assigned to them, or is the track number directly related to what track it actually is? I.e. if track 5 is assigned as track 3, will it be assigned to track 5 as originally specified in the cuesheet or will it assign it as track 3?

Edit : I also noticed an Autocorrect EDC/ECC codes in fireburner, does this function work? One more thing, how many tracks does Nights into Dreams have?
